The all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQG will need to be perfect if it is to win over buyers and based on this video starring company chief executive Ola Källenius, it appears the firm has created an off-roader just as capable as the iconic ICE model.
One of the biggest challenges in developing the EQG was ensuring that it would be as well suited to difficult terrain as the standard model with its three locking differentials. With this in mind, Mercedes-Benz opted against installing a dual-motor setup like some of its other EVs and has instead fitted four electric motors. This is because it is crucial for capable off-roaders to have torque sent to different wheels whenever and wherever it is needed.

This informative clip produced by Mercedes-Benz includes an interview with the chief engineer of the electric G, Fabian Schossau, before the presenter jumps inside the EQG and rides shotgun with Källenius along a testing off-road trail.
Sadly, we don’t get to see the EQG make any river crossings but Källenius does drive it over a series of massive rocks and along bumpy gravel and dirt roads. It passes over them flawlessly and even prompts the Mercedes-Benz boss to suggest the EQG may even be a more capable off-roader than the regular model. He also has some fun in the EQG, performing a complete 360-degree spin that the brand dubs the ‘G-turn.’ Rivian developed a similar feature for the R1T and R1S but recently decided against introducing it to customer cars.
A particularly cool sub-feature of the G-turn system is its ability to spin the off-roader 90 degrees. This could be particularly useful on a tight trail where you may have to make a sharp turn.
Mercedes-Benz has not yet said how much power the EQG will produce nor how far it will travel on a charge. What we do know is that it will be unveiled next year and introduced for the 2025 model year.
