General Motors reached the end of the line for Camaro ZL1 LT4 engine production on October 16, 2023, when the last supercharged LT4 was assembled by engine builder Billy Burke at the GM Performance Build Center (PBC).
Aside from potentially offering a limited edition “last call” Camaro Z/28, muscle car fans don’t have a real Camaro muscle car replacement to look forward to for 2025. One would assume the Camaro model name won’t be returning to production for the foreseeable future. A report from GM Authority confirms that the “2025 Chevrolet Camaro does not and will not exist, since the 2024 Camaro represented the final model year of the sixth-gen muscle car.” However, GM and Chevrolet have hinted that the Camaro nameplate may not retire, after all.
In a separate report, Car and Driver cited an anonymous insider from GM who says the Camaro will live on as a sub-brand which will offer various electric vehicle models. (Flashbacks to Ford’s Mustang Mach-E, anyone?) Plans for a sporty electric Camaro SUV is reportedly in the works, along with new coupe and convertible models, all of which will be equipped with electric powertrains.
Upon its introduction, the LT4, topped with a next-gen 1.7-liter Eaton supercharger, was the most powerful production engine offered in a GM vehicle. The LT4 was first offered in the C7 Z06 Corvette, but being a dry sump setup, it suffered certain heat-soak issues. Even so, this supercharged 6.2-liter gave the C7-series Z06 Corvette supercar-level performance. Since the sixth-generation Camaro ZL1 had more room under the hood, it was able to accommodate a wet-sump version of the LT4 which was also equipped with a larger intercooler system to tackle any overheating problems. The dry-sump LT4 was discontinued in early-2023.
The 6.2-liter LT4, ranked as one of the most powerful production engines available in the United States, is also found in the Cadillac CTS-V and Cadillac CT4 Blackwing. While the LT4 will no longer power the Camaro, word has it the engine will stick around to provide power for the Cadillac Blackwing and a few other GM special projects. It’s also still available for purchase directly from Chevrolet as a crate engine.
