Although the current iteration of the MX-5 Miata has been on the scene for a while, Mazda continues to refine this beloved roadster. The 2023 MX-5 Miata carries over into the new model year largely unchanged with the exception of a new color, Zircon Sand.
Beneath the hood, the MX-5 retains its naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, generating a robust 181 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. While these figures might not scream power, the MX-5’s responsiveness creates a direct connection between the car and the driver. In an era dominated by technology-laden vehicles, the MX-5 Miata stands out for its pure driving experience. While merging onto a highway may demand a bit of effort, the engine’s willingness to rev high, accompanied by a captivating soundtrack, compensates for any perceived shortcomings.

The six-speed manual transmission on the MX-5 is a testament to automotive excellence. Short gear lever throws and a perfectly weighted clutch make shifting gears a sheer joy, inducing an inevitable smile when maneuvering the MX-5. For those less inclined to manual shifting, a six-speed automatic option is available. Despite a hint of body roll, the MX-5’s direct steering ensures an eagerness to conquer every curve with gusto.
Recognizing the MX-5 Miata as a compact roadster, it’s no surprise that interior space is limited, with minimal storage options. A small box between the seats and a space under the armrest constitute the primary storage, with detachable cup holders providing a workaround for larger bottles. The rear offers 4.6 cubic feet of trunk space, accommodating a carry-on suitcase or a few bags.
On the technological front, the MX-5 shows signs of aging, featuring a 7-inch screen operating the Mazda Connect infotainment system. Operable mostly via a rotary knob, touchscreen capability is limited while in motion. Despite its somewhat dated feel and sluggish responsiveness, the MX-5 does offer wireless Apple CarPlay and two USB-A ports. A small digital display in front of the driver provides essential information.
In terms of safety, the MX-5 incorporates traditional driver assistance features, including blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. While adaptive cruise control is notably absent, the sheer thrill of driving the MX-5 renders it a negligible omission.
Available in three trim levels – Sport, Club, and Grand Touring – the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata also offers the MX-5 Miata RF with a retractable hardtop. Pricing kicks off at $29,215, with a fully optioned manual Grand Touring reaching $34,810. The RF, exclusively available in Club and Grand Touring trims, starts at $36,915.
In the realm of affordable, high-octane driving experiences, the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata reigns supreme, leaving contenders like the Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 trailing in the dust, unable to match its sheer driving pleasure within this price range.
