Taking a classic car and stuffing it with modern parts to create a reliable restomod continues to be a popular practice. The reverse process of fabricating classic car style into a modern muscle car is lesser known, but this new Ford Mustang GT dressed in a classic pony car guise is a prime example of what new car owners could do to make their modern Mustang sport retro flair.
Granted, it takes plenty of tools, know-how, and accessible parts to complete such a task, as a popular YouTube channel, titled B is for Build, shares in the below video.
The process of transforming a sixth-generation Ford Mustang into a 1960s lookalike took much modification, including changes to the modern chassis to fit the reproduced 1967 Ford Mustang body panels on the much larger and burlier 2019 Mustang.
The 2019 Ford Mustang was reportedly purchased as a write-off with minor damage. That said, no changes are made to the original 5.0-litre Coyote V8, apart from a cold air intake. The plastic engine cover was removed to relocate the oil filler for clearance issues, but the modern engine cover wouldn’t have looked right in a 1967 replica. The muscle car also received an upgraded exhaust system, but that was the easy part. The body swap is where the real work begins.
The builders are seen chopping the new car’s roof and windscreen to better follow the flow of the classic design. Several changes are made in the interior to give the cabin retro vibes while keeping the modern technology and creature comforts. It’s interesting to observe just how much the interior design of the pony car has changed over the last five (almost six) decades.
