LAWRENCE, Kansas — In one of the most anticipated matchups of the year, at least to this point, the No. 4 UConn men’s basketball team heads into No. 5 Kansas’ historic Phog Allen Fieldhouse for a nationally televised matchup between the two most recent national champions.
Kansas, led by preseason first-team AP All-American center Hunter Dickinson and projected first-round draft pick Kevin McCullar Jr., enters the game with a 6-1 record, its only loss coming to Marquette in the Maui Invitational during Feast Week. UConn, with four active players in double-digit scoring, is 7-0 and has won all of its games by 10 points or more.
It will likely be the most hostile road environments the Huskies have played in during the nonconference slate over the last two seasons, an atmosphere the defending champs are looking forward to.
“I’m sure there will be a lot of adversity in the game, it’s a different crowd, it’s a crowd that’s not cheering for us for the first time. We’ve just got to be extra sharp. This is gonna prepare us for Big East play,” point guard Tristen Newton, UConn’s all-time leader in triple-doubles (3) said. “(I) love winning away games, love our home crowd but just taking the joy of a win out of somebody else’s team is just a great feeling and something I take pride in and I want to start with on Friday.”
