The Benedict Castle Concours is dedicated to the memory of show founder Nicole Meguiar, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the Teen Challenge campus in Riverside, California. Teen Challenge, established in 1963, is a non-profit organization that relies entirely on donations and volunteer efforts of both individuals and organizations throughout Southern California communities in order to offer alcohol and drug abuse recovery services at no cost to the individual.
Constructed during the 1920s, the Benedict Castle was built as a private home for Charles Benedict and his wife on 22 acres of rolling hills. Today old growth trees provide ample shade and a lush environment to host perhaps the broadest assortment of show cars from classic age automobiles to muscle cars, hot rods and rare exotics that are shown anywhere in the state of California.
To enjoy the Benedict Castle Concours there’s a list of options for spectators and contestants to choose from. The celebrity packed Evening Gala begins on Saturday night, where a $100-per-person admission ticket takes place in the castle courtyard. For the 2023 edition of the Benedict Castle Concours Corky Coker was the Grand Marshal and the guest of honor at the Evening Gala. In the words of the concours presenter, “Its a great time to rub elbows with fellow car guys and car guy celebrities in an intimate environment.”
Sometimes the easiest way to get the best parking at a car show is to enter your own car. And that’s exactly what my friend Brian Shaw and I did to take in the 2023 edition of the Benedict Castle Concours. We entered Brian’s 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle built by Harold’s Hot Rod Shop and drove it there early Sunday morning. If a person’s car is a driver showing up early Sunday morning works great for moving in. If one is showing a high end show car, as many of the entrants do, move-in day for trailered cars takes place on Saturday prior to the Evening Gala.
The Benedict Castle Concours is where gearhead royalty gathers from around the globe and donates their time to meet and greet with the car loving public. For example, “Wheeler Dealers” star Mike Brewer has turned emceeing the event live as he walks the grounds and interviews car owners into an annual tradition, and Mike said he’s already signed up to be present at the 2024 edition of the Benedict Castle Concours. Past and often returning celebrity car guys and gals include Chip Foose, Ant Anstead, Von Hot Rod, Linda Vaughn, Barry Meguiar, Corky Coker, Wayne Carini, Ed Iskendarian, and Bruce Meyer.
By all indications, this 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air 2-door hardtop is a drag racer. Fenderwell headers, radiused rear wheel wells stuffed with cheater slicks, a chrome-plated rollbar, and eight-stack fuel injection aren’t subtle indicators that there is quite a bit of power waiting to be unleashed.Photo: John Gilbert
It doesn’t get more classic American than a 1957 Corvette in Venetian Red with a fuel-injected 283-cu.in. small-block. The solid-lifter version of the fuel-injected 283 produced 283 horsepower. The four-speed transmission became available after April 9,1957. Photo: John Gilbert
Custom painted a brighter shade of red, John Schirmer’s U.S. specification 1974 Alfa Romeo GTV sports a European intake manifold mounted with dual DCOE 40 Weber side-draft carburetors. Photo: John Gilbert
Lefthand drive 1967 Morris Cooper S is unusual, because most Mini Coopers sold in the U.S. were Austin Cooper and Austin Cooper S. The right-hand gas tank is a Cooper S feature. Photo: John Gilbert
The Benedict Castle Concours is renowned for presenting a large field of immaculate pre-war and post-war Packards, including Tom O’Hara’s 1934 Packard 1101 Dietrich 4-door convertible sedan on the hill.Photo: John Gilbert
Built in 1947, the 1932 Ford “Bob McGee roadster” has been restored to how it appeared on the October 1948 cover of Hot Rod magazine. Photo: John Gilbert
With SS396 cues visible, GNRS 2022 Restored Class winner Brian Shaw’s 1966 Chevelle Malibu shows well on the lawn. The Chevelle was built by Harold’s Hot Rod Shop of Enid, Oklahoma.Photo: John Gilbert
“Wheeler Dealers” star Mike Brewer and his lovely wife, Michele. Every year, no matter where he is in the world he may be filming, he makes time to fly in and host the Benedict Castle Concours. Photo: John Gilbert
