Indian roads are extremely tricky and challenging to drive on, and there are several examples on the internet that prove this. Apart from reckless drivers, jaywalkers, and bikers, there is always a risk of cattle or stray dogs jumping in front of vehicles. Animals have caused accidents on our roads in the past, and here we have a video that shows how a Mahindra Thar driver narrowly escaped from crashing into a Nilgai that suddenly came onto the road.
The video has been shared by Explore the Unseen 2.0 on their YouTube channel. In this video, the vlogger mentions an incident that happened to him recently. He was in his Mahindra Thar and was dropping some of his team members home after work. He was driving at night, and the road on which he was traveling was not well-lit. He used auxiliary lamps, as the stock headlamps in the Thar were of no use.

On the road, he saw a Maruti Dzire in the left lane. The vlogger used the dipper or pass light and started overtaking the sedan from the right lane. As he was overtaking, he suddenly noticed an animal crossing the road in front of him. Initially, he thought it was a cow, which is quite common on our roads. However, it was not cattle; it was a Nilgai. For those who are not aware, Nilgai is the largest antelope in Asia and is found across the northern Indian subcontinent.
The Nilgai suddenly appeared on the road from the median. The vlogger was not expecting to see anything like that. He immediately applied the brakes, and the Nilgai crossed the road. All this happened in just a few seconds. The Nilgai did not stop in the middle of the road, which made things slightly easier for the vlogger. If he had not applied the brakes or if the animal had decided to stop in the middle of the road, he would have crashed directly into the animal.
The vlogger was extremely lucky that he narrowly escaped from crashing into the animal. This is not the first time we have come across an incident like this. Last week, we saw a video of a Tata Altroz owner where a Nilgai collided with a speeding Tata Altroz on the newly inaugurated Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. The impact caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle; however, he managed to regain control. The Nilgai caused substantial damage to the hatchback. The right-side doors and fenders were all damaged in the accident.
In this case too, it appeared to be an adult Nilgai, which is extremely heavy and large. It would have easily caused damage to the SUV. This is why it is always recommended to drive cautiously on Indian roads, especially at night. Installing a dash camera is also a good idea as it can be used as evidence in case of an accident or such a situation. To avoid such accidents, one should follow defensive driving techniques. Apart from Nilgai, there have been cases where stray cattle on the road have caused major accidents.
