The Golden State Warriors have a 10-11 record about a quarter of the way through the NBA season, and their dynasty is hanging by a thread. The warning signs were already clear last season when they played very poorly on the road and lost in the second round of the playoffs, and now those signs simply cannot be ignored.
The team is a lot older than it was when it won the NBA championship two seasons ago, and one of its mainstays — Klay Thompson — is a thin shell of his old self. Thompson, who is one of the greatest outside shooters ever, is hitting just 39.7 percent of his shots from the field and 34.8 percent of his 3-point attempts while averaging only 15.5 points a game.
He is in the final year of his contract, and there has been speculation about whether he and the Warriors will come to terms on a new contract. More recently, there have been rumors that Golden State may trade him to place a proverbial defibrillator on the franchise’s chest and shock it back into competitiveness.

But one executive with knowledge of the situation poured some cold water over the talk of Golden State possibly trading Thompson.
“Everybody knows Klay is frustrated,” the executive said. “There is no hiding that. But there has not been one conversation about trading him at this point, and that won’t change as long as Steph (Curry) is around. Steph would rather go down swinging with Klay than trade him for some shiny object that might or might not improve you a little. And, really, ownership would too, even if they’re frustrated with Klay on the contract stuff.”
Until 2019, Thompson was a legitimate star. He shot over 40 percent from 3-point range in each of his first eight NBA seasons, and his ability to hit contested treys, either off a pass or the dribble, was nearly unmatched. In fact, perhaps the only player who was better than him in that department was teammate Stephen Curry.

But Thompson tore his ACL during the 2019 NBA Finals, and he later tore his Achilles in late 2020. After struggling through much of the 2021-22 season, he perked up down the stretch and had spurts where he displayed his old marksmanship as Golden State won it all.
Last season, he shot 41.2 percent from downtown and averaged 21.9 points per contest, creating hope that he could at least come close to his old self. But now, that hope is all but gone.
