Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to venture into the electric vehicle (EV) segment with its inaugural electric car, the eVX, scheduled to roll off the production lines at the Suzuki Motor’s Gujarat facility in 2024. The Hansalpur facility, about 90 km from Ahmedabad, currently produces popular models like Swift, Baleno, Dzire, and Fronx. This move comes as Maruti Suzuki aims to make its mark in the rapidly evolving EV landscape, aligning with the changing automotive trends.
The decision to manufacture the eVX at the Gujarat facility signifies Maruti Suzuki’s strategic focus on EV production for both the domestic market and international exports. Rahul Bharti, Executive Director of Corporate Affairs at Maruti Suzuki, revealed that the new plant, or production line, dedicated to the eVX, will be an addition to the existing SMG (Suzuki Motor Gujarat) facility, which currently operates three plants – A, B, and C.
Earlier this year, Suzuki Motor entered into an agreement with the Gujarat government, committing an investment of over ₹3,000 crore for the production of electric vehicles. The first electric vehicle, an SUV, is slated for launch in the fiscal year 2024-25. Maruti Suzuki’s foray into electric mobility is a significant step, reflecting the industry’s shift towards cleaner and sustainable transportation solutions.
The eVX has already been showcased as a concept model at the Auto Expo in January and was later featured at the Japan Auto Show. The compact electric SUV is expected to compete with other electric offerings in the market, such as the Tata Harrier EV, Curvv EV, and the upcoming Hyundai Creta EV.
Maruti Suzuki has provided insights into the eVX’s specifications, emphasizing its appeal in the compact SUV segment. Measuring over four meters in length, the eVX is set to be one of the early entrants in the compact SUV electric vehicle category in India. The car boasts a futuristic design, featuring sporty LED headlights and DRL units, a closed front grille, connected LED taillights, and stylish alloy wheels. The interior is characterized by a sleek dashboard, a large free-standing digital dual-screen serving as both the infotainment system and driver display, a two-spoke steering wheel with touch-based controls, and more.
In terms of performance, Maruti Suzuki claims the eVX will offer a range of around 550 km on a single charge, powered by a 60 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This move towards electric mobility reflects the industry’s commitment to sustainable transportation solutions, aligning with the evolving preferences of environmentally conscious consumers. As Maruti Suzuki takes strides into the electric vehicle segment, the eVX stands as a significant milestone in the company’s journey towards a greener and cleaner automotive future.
