Episode 4 of the Hemmings Fox Body Rehab YouTube video series takes a deep dive into some technical tasks typically required by a 32-year-old Ford Mustang that is being transformed from stock to a streetcar driven on a drag strip.
In the previous episode, we installed a new LenTech valve body in the transmission to get the full benefit of the fox body Mustang’s 306 horsepower and 334 pound-feet of torque. Now, the Moser Engineering M88 rear end is nearly complete, but before tightening the lose bolts and moving on to the next phase, Junior, Terry, and the crew gear up to finalize some remaining items.
The first priority? To enhance our launches with a new LenTech torque converter. The unit’s higher stall required careful installation to match the recessed depth of our prior unit. Next, we get invaluable tips from Terry McGean, Hemmings Muscle Machines Editor-in-Chief, on how to properly apply POR-15’s rust preventative paint to rejuvenate the weathered rear backing plates and protection them from future corrosion.
Building a car to go to battle on the drag strip isn’t solely focused on go-fast parts. As mundane as it may seem, making sure the brakes won’t let you down is even more important than speed gains. After a quick brake line replacement with a fresh set from Classic Industries, the team moves on to installing an aluminum driveshaft from Summit Racing, and then, finally, the MOSER M88 MusclePak rear end (along with new rear control arms) is hoisted up and bolted into place.
