We take a look at the sale of a classic 1955 Ford Thunderbird and a 1969 Ford Mustang fastback with an engine transplant. About the only things in common with a 1991 Mercedes-Benz 250GD and a 1965 300SE coupe are the badge on the grille and their appeal to collectors. Pontiac fans always seem to show up for a red, Tri-Power, four-speed ’66 GTO. We also examine the sale of a Euro-spec, oval-window 1956 Volkswagen Beetle in this week’s round up of successful Hemmings Auctions and Make Offer listings.
On Hemmings Auctions, a total of 38 lots reached the final bid. Our registered buyers purchased 24 of these lots in total via Hemmings Auctions and post-auction Make Offer listings, for a net 63% sell-through rate. An additional 14 cars were sold via direct Make Offer listings.

1991 Mercedes-Benz 250GD

Reserve: $67,000
Selling Price: $73,500
Recent Market Range: $60,000-$85,000
Following in the footsteps of its utilitarian brethren—the Jeep and Land Rover—the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, a.k.a. Geländewagen, a.k.a. G-Wagen, has found a strong following as a civilian SUV following its original development as a military vehicle. This gray market, two-door, diesel-powered convertible 1991 Mercedes-Benz 250GD actually boasts of a prior military career with the Germany army as well as use with the U.N. before it was decommissioned. The seller reports it was still in U.N. livery when he purchased it from a Dutch dealer in 2021. Subsequently restored in Spain, this G-Wagen was then imported to the U.S. It sold very nearly in the middle of the market range as a post-auction Make Offer listing.
1955 Ford Thunderbird

Reserve: $20,000
Selling Price: $26,250
Recent Market Range: $17,000-$24,000
Ford’s first-generation, two-seat Thunderbird has been a collectible car nearly since it was brand new. Collectors still seem to appreciate its economy of lines during an era of some fairly ostentatious styling in Detroit. This 1955 Ford Thunderbird had another element that seems to appeal to bidders: long-term ownership. The owner of this car shared that he had received the car as a graduation gift in 1965. It was reportedly restored in the 1980s and seemed to still present as a high-quality driver in the provided photos. There were only 10 bids, but the majority counted as most were at the reserve or higher, resulting in a net sale price 31% over that reserve.
1956 Volkswagen Beetle

Reserve: $22,000
Selling Price: $23,100
Recent Market Range: $19,000-$29,500
When first produced, the Volkswagen Beetle had a two-piece rear window. Later Beetles had a much larger one-piece window, but from 1953 through 1957, it had a relatively small oval rear window. Oval-window Bugs are prized by collectors and result in a premium over later, mechanically equal examples with the larger window. This 1956 Volkswagen Beetle was listed as having been originally sold in Spain, and included a badge installed for the original owner when new, as well as its Spanish license plates. The recently installed—but anachronistic—bright red vinyl upholstery looked to be in excellent shape. With a net price just above reserve, this Beetle sold in the expected market range.
1966 Pontiac GTO

Reserve: $43,000
Selling Price: $43,050
Recent Market Range: $42,000-$59,000
Tri-Power. 389. Four-speed. Montero Red. GTO. Each of these things can get a muscle car fan excited, but combined together they make for the complete package for Pontiac enthusiasts. This 1966 Pontiac GTO hardtop ticked all those boxes and had the added cachet of an older restoration that appeared to be holding up well. Though the included PHS documents indicate this GTO was, indeed, a factory Tri-Power example, there were some modifications under the hood as well as the installation of Weld alloy wheels. Still, following a failure to meet the reserve during the auction period, it sold right inside the lower end of the expected market range as a Make Offer listing.
1969 Ford Mustang SportsRoof

Reserve: $38,000
Selling Price: $33,600
Recent Market Range: $31,000-$43,500
Ford originally installed a 250-cu.in, 155-hp straight-six in this 1969 Ford Mustang SportsRoof, but the pony car was given a healthy dose of power with the installation of a modified 351-cu.in. V8 when it was restored. Though output specs were not provided by the seller, the engine had a host of Edelbrock go-fast parts including the camshaft, aluminum cylinder heads, intake and four-barrel carburetor. An MSD ignition and aluminum radiator were also installed. A fresh interior, “Go Bananas” refinish and some 15-inch aluminum wheels all resonated with fans as this one received nearly 25,000 views on its way to selling as a post-auction Make Offer listing within the expected market range.
1965 Mercedes-Benz 300SE Coupe

Reserve: $14,000
Selling Price: $26,250
Recent Market Range: $10,000-$17,000
The Mercedes-Benz cars from the 1960s have a seemingly timeless appeal, perhaps owing to their lines as much as the vehicles’ reputation for longevity. Among the more timelessly appealing designs are the W112 coupes. Though built on the same wheelbase as the more-common W111-chassis vehicles, the W112s were more luxurious and were powered exclusively by the company’s then-largest engine, a 3.0-liter OHC inline-six. With just 2,419 produced between 1962 and 1967, they are also exceedingly rare. This 1965 Mercedes-Benz 300SE Coupe appeared to have some needs, but bidders responded in a manner that they planned on seeing to those needs, with a net sale price some 88% better than the reserve.
