Since leaving as head coach at Syracuse in March, Jim Boeheim has been effusive in his praise of UConn.
The legendary Syracuse boss said the Huskies were national title favorites ahead of last year’s Sweet 16, before they rolled through Arkansas, Gonzaga, Miami (FL) and San Diego State en route to the program’s fifth national championship.
On Tuesday, Boeheim joined The Field of 68 podcast and echoed the same sentiment about this year’s UConn team. When asked who he thought was the favorite in the Big East after preseason conference title pick Marquette fell at Providence, 72-57 earlier in the night, Boeheim said his mind had been made up before the No. 6 Golden Eagles’ loss.

“I thought Connecticut was better way before this,” Boeheim said. “I thought even at the Kansas game, which Kansas had to make four threes in a row at the end of the game to win. And we all know how tough it is to win there. They go out to Gonzaga and win pretty easily. …
“I think Connecticut’s maybe the best team in the country. I mean, really. I think you can easily make the case for them. And they still haven’t gotten (Stephon) Castle back at full strength and he’s coming back. But they’ve got the guy in the middle (Donovan Clingan), and he’s pretty darn good. And they’ve got guys who can shoot, physical guys, tough guys. And by the way, they won the national championship last year. So I like Connecticut right now over everybody I’ve seen.”
Field of 68 host Jeff Goodman agreed, saying he now has UConn ahead of Marquette and in the mix with Purdue (currently No. 1 in the AP poll) and Arizona (No. 4) as the best team in the nation.
“UConn and Marquette are like the co-favorites. Coming into tonight they were basically even in terms of the Vegas line,” Goodman said. “I think I like UConn now though. I just don’t think UConn has many weaknesses. Again, defending champs. They play hard as (expletive). They’ve got kind of everything, and I don’t know what they’re missing right now.”
UConn (10-1) is currently ranked No. 5 in the AP poll, though the Huskies certainly have one of the best resumes in the country, having beaten Indiana, Texas, North Carolina and Gonzaga in mostly convincing fashion, and lost by three at Kansas. Marquette (9-3) beat the Jayhawks on a neutral site in the Maui Invitational before losing to No. 1 Purdue 75-72 and falling at Wisconsin, 75-64.
