Hemmings Auctions Top 10 Listings of 2023

With over 3,000 cars crossing the Hemming Auctions virtual block in 2023, we take a look at the biggest sellers that made headlines for collectors when the dust settled and where the vehicles found new homes. Below are the cars that sold for the highest amounts the past 12 months on the Hemmings Marketplace.

1. 1963 Jaguar E-type Roadster $204,750

1963 Jaguar E-type/XKE Roadster/Open Two-Seater rear quarter, top down

This 1963 Jaguar E-Type Roadster appeared to be an excellent example of an early Series 1 Open Two-Seater. It had the distinction of having been restored in 2020 and then highly detailed by the consigning dealer prior to its auction listing. Though it failed to reach reserve during the live auction, the high bidder and the seller reached an agreement within an hour of the auction ending via the post-auction Make Offer process.

2. 1970 Plymouth ‘Cuda Hemi $201,600

1970 Plymouth \u2018Cuda Hemi front quarter

You don’t even need to be a fan of Mopar muscle to understand what a genuine R-code, 426 Hemi-powered, E-body 1970 Plymouth ‘Cuda means. This restored example appeared to be extra clean, including not just the sheet metal and interior, but the underbody and the engine bay, too. Unlike some cars that sell almost immediately in the post-auction Make Offer process, this Hemi ‘Cuda sold just about eight weeks later to the same person who had been the high bidder at auction. Persistence paid off for the buyer and seller here.

3 (tie). 1974 Jaguar E-type Series 3 Convertible $157,500

1974 Jaguar E-type Series 3 Convertible front quarter, optional hard top installed

With a V12 engine, four-speed manual transmission and a color combination of British Racing Green over a tan leather interior, this restored 1974 Jaguar E-type Series 3 Convertible proved to be an excellent example of a final-year E-type. Once again, despite the bidding stalling during the auction, this vehicle found a buyer later via the Make Offer process, where it sold for one of the strongest prices realized for a Series 3 E-type in the U.S. this past year.

3 (tie). 1960 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Convertible for $157,500

1960 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Convertible side view, top up

Cadillac’s halo car in 1960 was the Eldorado and the Biarritz Convertible offered very low production along with fully equipped luxury features as standard equipment. After the over-the-top styling of the 1959 models, the understated look of the 1960 offers a lot of appeal to some collectors. After not quite hitting reserve during the live auction that ended on a Friday afternoon, this restored 1960 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Convertible found a new buyer whose weekend offer was accepted the following Monday. For the seller, the price realized was very near the high end of the going market rate and well above the average for such cars sold at public auction in 2023.

5. 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray $155,400

1966 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray Coupe 427 with side pipes, front quarter

A 427-powered C2 Corvette will always get the attention of car collector. But make it an original-owner car with its numbers-matching, factory-installed 427 V8 under the hood and you have a bona fide winner on your hands. This 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray was exactly such a car, resulting in 35 bids (14 of which extended the auction), more than 32,000 views of the listing, and a rock-solid sale price well above the average rate for the typical ’67 L36 Sting Ray coupe. Then again, this example was hardly typical.

6. 1966 Dodge Charger Hemi $152,250

1966 Dodge Charger Hemi 426 front quarter

Speaking of one-owner, mid-Sixties, big-block American iron, this 1966 Dodge Charger Hemi ticked all the right boxes, including the one that indicates it was still with its factory-installed 426 Hemi V8 under the hood. Original-owner Hemi cars are fewer and farther between each year, original-engine cars even more rare. The bidders responded here with rabid enthusiasm as a total of 64 bids brought us to a net sale price that was a full 34% over reserve and a solid 14% above the high end of the going market rate. Its sale price was the highest paid at public auction for a first-gen Charger in more than four-and-a-half years.

7. 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 $150,150

1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 427 front quarter

Low-volume, big-block muscle cars will seemingly never go out of style with car collectors. This 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, resplendent in Acapulco Blue with dual white stripes down the center, featured a 427-cu.in. V8, with the tantalizing, yet unproven, possibility that, as a Shelby engineering vehicle, it may have been built with the more potent 427 under the hood instead of the standard 428 of the production GT500. Though this example did not appear to be in pristine/concours condition, it still presented rather well and found a new buyer after a dozen bids extended the auction for 24 minutes.

8. 1958 Chevrolet Impala Convertible $137,550

1958 Chevrolet Impala Convertible side view, top up

Chevrolet’s 1958 design was a departure from the previous year’s high fins and even higher greenhouse. Adorned with an abundance of chrome, the ‘58s have grown a strong following in recent years. That strong following easily outpaced our pre-auction estimates as this bright red, very nicely restored, 348 Tri-Power 1958 Chevrolet Impala Convertible sold for not only 53% above the reserve, but at a solid 31% above the highest market rate in recent months. This listing proved a very strong result and an indicator that the market remains strong for the nicest examples of the top models.

9. 1956 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Convertible $136,500

1956 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Convertible front quarter, top up

What’s this? Another red 1950s GM convertible with a white top that sells for a strong price? Though not a Chevy, this 1956 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Convertible still featured V8 power, in this case the Eldorado-exclusive dual-quad 365-cu.in. V8. The Eldorado was a much more exclusive model in the 1950s than it was in later years and this example proved a hit with the bidders. Decked out with seemingly as much chrome as red paint, this Eldorado ultimately sold very near the high end of the market range.

10. 1969 Pontiac Firebird Convertible Trans Am Tribute $131,250

1969 Pontiac Firebird Convertible Trans Am Tribute front quarter, top down

Pontiac made a miniscule amount of Trans Am convertibles in 1969, with just eight rolling off the production line. Given the rarity, it’s no surprise that some enterprising soul turned a more ordinary Firebird into this 1969 Pontiac Trans Am Convertible Tribute. And since it’s not an original car, he could take some liberties, such as installing a bored and stroked 462-cu.in. Ram Air IV V8 engine, a six-speed manual, and a set of 17-inch, Rally II style wheels. This listing is one more that achieved success as a Make Offer listing following its original auction run.
