Since MG Gloster became the first mass-market car in India to feature ADAS, several manufacturers began offering ADAS in the high-spec variants of their premium models. In most of these cars and SUVs, the company-fitted ADAS usually work seamlessly most of the time. However, in the case of after-market dashcams, which come with mild ADAS assistance, the functionality is usually not as accurate as the stock ADAS. We came across one such instance in which the ADAS functionality of an after-market dashcam unit goes berserk during a drive.
A recent post on Reddit shared by “CarsIndia” shows how a 70mai dashcam installed in a car freaks out while the vehicle is being driven amidst heavy traffic conditions. The video post shows a car moving through a road clogged with moving traffic and people. The dashcam, which is seen as having the functionality of pedestrian warning, starts behaving abnormally while beeping inconsistent alerts.
It is visible that the system is unable to detect the inconsistent pedestrian movement around the vehicle, and due to this, it starts beeping irregular alerts. It is also visible that the system is also taking in other motorists and vegetable vendors sitting aside the road as pedestrians, which is generally not the case with ADAS functions that come stock in the car. The system is also seen measuring the speeds of the other vehicles around that car inconsistently.
The video post on Reddit has been attracting attention and comments from various netizens, who are amused by the functionality of this dashcam ADAS. While some are jokingly calling out these clips as footage from a video game, some are doubting the functionality of ADAS in a country like India, where the traffic conditions are alarmingly irregulated.
The usability and accuracy of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) for cars in India are debatable for many people. Even in the mass-market vehicles which come with ADAS, there have been a few instances when the ADAS went wrong, resulting in minor accidents. Systems like adaptive cruise control and lane change assist, however, have become boons for people who majorly drive on highways, with these systems reducing driving fatigue to a significant extent. Many people are even seen misusing the ADAS, especially while high-speed highway driving, with them leaving control over the vehicle completely and making videos for social media platforms.
How to use ADAS in India
As ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) become more common in everyday cars, many drivers are using these systems in unsafe ways. Some people let the car handle itself while they film videos or do risky activities, which could cause accidents. ADAS relies on sensors like radars and cameras to assist drivers while on the road.
Lately, there have been instances where individuals activate ADAS and then engage in various activities inside the car, such as playing games, eating, or even sleeping. Engaging in such behaviour while driving is hazardous, not just for the driver and passengers in that vehicle but also for other drivers nearby.
Car manufacturers offer Level-1 and Level-2 ADAS functions in India, allowing drivers to experience partially autonomous driving, where the vehicle controls some parts of its movement. These features aim to make driving safer and more convenient. However, if misused, they can endanger the driver and occupants of the vehicle.
