When Dodge introduced the 2023 Hornet GT and 2024 R/T, they not only unveiled the most potent compact SUVs in the segment, but they also presented what is considered to be the world’s first compact sport utility muscle car – and you know what… it’s about time.
Priced at approximately $31,000, slightly higher than its class counterparts, the Hornet justifies its cost with unmatched performance. Sporting a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine producing 268 horsepower and nearly 300 lb.-ft of torque (for the GT variant), it outshines competitors. Notably, its real automatic transmission flaunts 9 gears, a departure from the standard CVT transmission that’s found on many competitors.
The Hornet is an all-wheel-drive powerhouse that exudes a muscle car vibe, drawing design inspiration from Dodge’s iconic muscle car and SUV lineup. With twin hood scoops, an aggressive grille, and an air dam that could have come straight from the Charger, the Hornet has the look down. Check out the lowered look via a potential Direct Connection factory spring kit teased on the Hornet GLH concepts, and you’ll realize that Dodge was aiming for a CUV crossed with muscle, not just a CUV crossed with the average consumer sedan.
The Mazda CX-30 Turbo emerges as one of the closest comparable CUV models. However, accessing a turbo 4-cylinder in the CX-30 necessitates moving up to its 6th tier, leaving 5 lower-tier options available. This variety contributes to the 8 versions within the CX-30 lineup, contributing to the crowded nature of the CUV segment. In contrast, the 2024 Hornet simplifies choices by offering 4 levels: GT, GT Plus, R/T, and R/T Plus. For instance, the Track Pack features 20” Abyss Finish wheels, a dual-stage suspension, Alcantara sport seats, aluminum interior accents, and Brembo brakes.
In terms of performance within its segment, the Hornet GT stands out with its impressive 268 hp and 295 lb.-ft of torque, and a nine-speed transmission. This gear advantage contributes to the Hornet achieving fuel efficiency within 1 mpg of the CX-30’s 22 city/30 highway ratings. Ultimately, independent testing reveals the Hornet displays quicker acceleration to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds, leaving the CX-30 (non-turbo) behind at 8.1 seconds.

For years, economic crossovers have adhered to the stylistic norms set by Japanese and European designs. Yet, the Hornet boldly diverges from this trend with its assertive aesthetic, channeling a distinctly domestic and muscular flair. Departing from convention, its front-end exudes an Americanized style that provocatively asks, “What if we merged Charger DNA into a crossover?”
The Hornet boasts slightly larger dimensions across height, width, and length when juxtaposed with models like the Mazda CX-30. It’s notably broader, measuring a full foot wider at 82″ compared to the CX-30’s 70.7″, and extends 5 inches further in length, measuring 178″ versus the CX-30’s 173″. Consequently, this translates to 27 cubic feet of cargo space, a significant advantage over the CX-30’s 20 cubic feet. While the remaining interior dimensions remain similar, the Hornet’s surplus space primarily resides in the cargo area, a pivotal consideration for prospective CUV buyers.
The interior amenities of the Hornet GT match those of the Mazda offering, albeit with a departure from the previously prominent sculpted styling. Instead, the Hornet GT opts for a more dynamic aesthetic. In contrast to the CX-30’s setup featuring analog gauges and a touchscreen radio display, the Hornet GT prioritizes its interior elements. Positioned prominently atop the dash’s center stack is a spacious 10.25” touchscreen, conveniently accessible to the driver, with HVAC vents below. Its fully digital and customizable gauge display allows for personalized configurations. Unlike the CX-30, there’s no need to grapple with a cumbersome control knob while driving, as the Hornet’s touchscreen remains accessible when the vehicle is in gear, a feature that isn’t present in the Mazda.
Pricing for the Hornet starts off at around $31,000, whereas a base model Mazda CX-30 begins at $25,000, marking a notable price gap. Yet, when comparing the base Hornet GT to the CX-30 Turbo, priced at nearly $33,000, the Hornet emerges as $2,000 cheaper for equivalent models. Across all aspects, the new Hornet GT outperforms competitors in a fiercely competitive market. It stands alone as the sole high-performance muscle CUV available, with Dodge embracing its heritage by offering future optional Direct Connection upgrade packages through Dodge Power Broker dealers, all without voiding the factory warranty. Some of these potential upgrades, showcased on the Hornet R/T GLH Concept vehicle, range from stage kits to lowering kits and styling packages. This positions the Dodge Hornet as the ultimate small family crossover for those gearheads seeking more versatility in their active lives.
