1970 Dodge Challenger R/T Convertible Hemi Tribute Packs the Punch of the Real Thing

When it comes to muscle car royalty, factory-original, Hemi-powered, E-body Mopars sit right there at the top of the heap. Make it a convertible Challenger or ‘Cuda and you’re talking about a royal court with a tiny handful of members. While not every source agrees, it seems that just over 40 E-body Hemi convertibles emerged from the factory in 1970 and ’71. Only nine of those wore Dodge Challenger R/T badges, all from 1970. With just single-digit quantities of the Hemi Challenger R/T Convertible made, they are understandably among the most valuable American cars of the era, with seven-figure prices realized at high-profile auctions in recent years.

Fortunately, Chrysler produced nearly 3,600 total Challenger Convertibles in 1970 and with some motivation, a bit of skill and the broad availability of parts, the act of creating a clone or tribute version offers an alternative to big-money originals. This restored 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T Convertible Hemi tribute now on Hemmings Auctions packs all the right elements of a legit Hemi car, including its 426-cu.in. V8 engine, a functional Shaker hood scoop, R/T trim and more.

426 Hemi Powertrain

This droptop E-body may have left the Hamtramck, Michigan assembly plant with the modest G-code 318-cu.in V8, topped with a two-barrel carburetor and rated at 230 horsepower, but today sports a 426-cu.in. Hemi V8, an engine rated at 425 horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque from the factory. The seller shared casting codes showing the engine block and intake manifold to be correct for a 1970. As in the original, this one sports a hydraulic camshaft, a change instituted for all street-going Hemis that year. A pair of correct Carter four-barrel carburetors sit atop that intake manifold.

Though it appears factory original on the outside, the engine build apparently was enhanced with an Eagle forged crankshaft, NOS rods and ARP fasteners. The seller notes that the rebuilt powertrain had only accumulated 1,669 miles at the time of the listing submission. The companion four-speed manual transmission—also indicated to be correct for a ’70 R/T Hemi—was also reportedly rebuilt during the restoration and is listed as shifting “perfectly.”

Refinished in Factory-Correct FE5 Bright Red

According to the fender tag, the FE5 Bright Red hue is authentic to the factory build of this car, and the refinish appears to be holding up well. The power-operated white convertible top also looks pretty good with the seller using the “perfect” to describe it. The cable-stayed hood pins are another nice touch in the R/T Hemi tribute game.

Inside, the reupholstered white vinyl trim looks to remain in excellent shape and contrasts with the black carpet. The simulated woodgrain, rim-blow, three-spoke steering wheel and pistol grip shifter also do yeoman service as part of the build.

Restored and Updated Chassis and Undercarriage

At Hemmings.com, we ask for sellers to provide underbody images of the vehicles they list to let bidders know the quality of a restoration. The pictures the undercarriage of this Challenger provided by the seller show an exceptionally clean, seemingly freshly painted surface of the lower components of the unibody chassis. The Sure Grip Dana 60 rear axle, said to be equipped with the correct 3.54 gears of a Hemi four-speed also looks fresh. There are only the most minor elements of surface rust appearing on a few fasteners, but you really have to look for them under this E-body. Along with the Dana 60 axle, the rest of the chassis has been upgraded to Hemi specs.

Head on over to Hemmings Auctions to take a look at this faithful 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T Convertible Hemi tribute to one of the all-time kings of muscle car royalty. Listen to that Hemi rumble in the videos shared by the seller and imagine yourself cruising into town knowing that you had one of the hottest factory hot rod engines available under your right foot.
