If there is a cooler company through the modern automotive industry than ASC, we’re not sure what it is. These guys have seemingly been the go-to location for boutique style work that huge car companies sometimes need. Want to build the ASC Mclaren Mustang? How about the Buick GNX? Maybe your company needs to build a convertible model of a sports car but you do not want to invest on a whole new line to do it. Call ASC. That is exactly what Mitsubishi did in the 1990s when they wanted to make a convertible version of their popular 3000GT. The process is shown here and it is wild.
We always think of car manufacturing as this hugely automated process being completed in cavernous factories with robots and all kinds of advanced technology. Well, what if instead it is hand work being done with guys wielding plasma cutters, sawzalls, and welders. Guys chopping stuff off, welding stuff in, and basically reconfiguring perfectly good new cars. Amazing stuff here that shows how things are not always what they seem.
This video indicates that it is a 12-hour process end to end to make one of these convertibles. In so many ways they’re like hand built cars! We’re guessing no one that bought one of these had any clue of the process involved in building it. We sure as hell didn’t!
