Just over two years ago I wrote that if this calm, loving, and relaxing fantasy anime got another season, I’d happily tune back in. And here we are! Red is on a journey to the mountain range called the Wall at World’s End in search of a blue sapphire for his fiancée Rit’s engagement ring. To which I can only say Daaaaaaw!
The newly liberated former hero Ruti joins her big brother on the first journey that’s not about fighting the Demon King, while Mogrim is also in search of earth crystal to make a knife for, of all things, a painless Caesarian section for his wife. Everyone is on this trip for someone else’s sake; for love.
Having met Godwin in the woods and learned that Red is in Zoltan, the elf Yarandrala travels there to find Red and Rit not at home. The town guard identifies Godwin as a thorn in Red’s side. When Yarandrala hears that he betrayed Red, she summons a giant dragon made of roots.
Not sure what’s going on but seeing that Red, Rit, and Ruti’s home is at risk of harm, Tisse Garland and Mr. Crawly Wawly spring into action. While she gets close to Yarandrala, Tisse ends up restrained by the roots. Fortunately, when Tisse tells her where Red is and what he’s doing, a delighted Yarandrala dispels the dragon and roots.
On their way to the Wall at World’s End Red’s party encounters a goblin bandits, but dispatch them with ease, then reach the forest of the rodent-like Zoogs, whose Elder is friends with Red. He warns them that the Gem Giants, those Red and Mogrim wish to meet, seem to be angry about something at the moment.
After the goblin battle Ruti asks Red if it’s really okay for her to lay down the mantle of Hero and live a life of freedom, as she fears the Almighty Demis doesn’t approve. As they relax a bit before heading to bed, Red wonders to Rit whether Ruti’s “New Truth” wasn’t a blessing of Demis, but something from within Ruti herself. Whatever the case, both of them agree that they’ll always be by Ruti’s side.
As Yarandrala heads to Red, she’s curious why Tisse is accompanying her. Tisse says at first it’s because the Wall has natural hot springs—not a bad reason, but not the real reason. She’s worried how the elf will react to Ruti quitting, but once Tisse confirms that Red and Gideon are one and the same, Yarandrala eventually picks up that Ruti must be with him too.
As they reach the tree line and draw closer to the Wall, Red urges Ruti to live her life the way she wants. Even if the Almighty won’t stand for it, he’s got her back, and so does Rit. Just then, Tisse and Yarandrala appear over the crest of a hill, and a tearful Yarandrala jumps into Red’s arms, overjoyed to be reunited.
This episode is bookended by the naming of a new Hero: Van, last survivor of the Flamberge Kingdom. He joins with a masked woman named Esta, who has the same dark hair and seiyu as Theodora (are they one and the same?), the fairy Lavender, and Cardinal Ljubo on a new quest to defeat evil.
You could call Van the antithesis of Ruti; free will isn’t just irrelevant in his eyes, but impossible. To him, even those who die, be they innocent humans or beasts he must defeat, are fulfilling the roles Almighty Demis laid out for them. If Van ever crosses paths with Red, or Ruti in particular, that blind absolutist zealotry is sure to clash with their self-determinist way of life.
Then again, maybe Van and his party merely remain on the margins of the central story: one in which Red is looking for nothing more high or mighty than a beautiful gem to match his beloved’s eyes, and one in which he’ll do anything to protect his sister’s right to live a simple, quiet life—as portrayed in a very cozy Ruti and Tisse-heavy OP.
