If you grow up as a car enthusiast, with parents who taught you the differences between their favorite hot rod and muscle car models, you know the differences between the years of your favorites. If you grew up in a first gen Camaro family like me, then identifying a 1967 vs 1968 Camaro isn’t difficult. If you grew up in a Mopar family, then telling the difference between your favorite years of B-body Mopars isn’t difficult. And if you grew up as a Ford kid who’s dad had a 1970 Mustang Mach 1, you probably know the differences between the 1969 and 1970 models. But what about the oddballs? And I’m not talking about the weird ones, I’m talking about the rare ones. Rare like the 1969 and 1970 Shelby GT500s.
These cars were built with different styling and performance parts that make them much harder for the casual observer to differentiate. In this video with Chad Ehrlich from Nobody Else’s Auto, he meets up with Shelby expert Jim Wicks to discuss the differences and share them with all of us. I sure don’t know the differences off the top of my head, so I’m going to watch and learn as well.
Check out the video below.
Video Description:
Shelby Mustangs have always been special cars. The years 1969 and 1970 were very similar cars, but there are some very interesting differences between them!
Our good friend Jim Wicks has spent a lot of time with us over the years. He has been involved in the Shelby and Cobra world since way back when these were all just essentially used cars. In today’s world, it’s kind of hard to imagine, but back in the early to mid 70’s, that’s all they were!!! He is a literal encyclopedia of knowledge and Shelbys and Cobras are where he really specializes. His knowledge of these cars is so deep, that some of our viewers now refer to Jim as “Wicksipedia”.
We were at Mecum with Jim recently checking out a very rare, 1970 Shelby GT500 powered by a 428 Super Cobra Jet Engine. That was when he suggested we talk about the differences between the 1969 and the 1970 Shelby. One very interesting thing that I didn’t know, is that they were all actually 1969’s!!!!!! The 1970 Shelby Mustangs were actually sent back to Ford and had 1970 VIN numbers reassigned to the leftover 1969 bodies!!!
Let’s go spend a few minutes with Jim and learn some more interesting facts about these special cars!!!!
