There’s an old adage to never buy another person’s project but this car might be the exception to the rule. This 2002 Toyota Tacoma appears to be a very high-level electromod with a Tesla Model 3 Performance battery pack and rear-wheel drive. It’s quick, offers well over 100 miles of range, and can be yours.
Electromods are nothing new. People swap electric power plants into all sorts of different vehicles. What most have in common though is that the ending product tends to be some sort of halo vehicle with a price tag that only the wealthy can afford. This Tesla Taco might be the “poor man’s” way into the game.
It features an array of custom parts including the battery pack and rear drive unit from a Tesla Model 3 Performance, rear brakes from a Tesla, front brakes from a Cadillac, and an Orion BMS2 battery management system. Perhaps the only visible bit that hints at the level of customization here though is the mismatched wheels. According to the seller, the Tesla wheels wouldn’t fit on the front so he made do with what he had.

Beyond that, this build looks very clean and that includes a charge port behind the fuel door, a digital infotainment system, and push-button gear selectors in the center console. There’s no word on exactly how much power it makes but the seller says that he believes that it’ll do 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in about 4-5 seconds. On top of that it has a functional range of 150-175 miles (241-281 km).
The car is now up for auction over at Cars&Bids with a price as of this writing of just $4,500. That makes something like this seem almost worth the potential hassle of having to figure out maintenance years down the road.
Notably, this isn’t the seller’s first Tacoma project. In the past, he built and auctioned a 2016 Tacoma TRD with a 6.2-liter LS3 V8 under the hood.
