When the end came for Rocky Mountain Raceways in Salt Lake City, Utah, the last few moments were not spent cleaning out desks, moving vehicles off of the property, or locking the doors. Instead, the staff threw a final event called “Night of Fire” that was a proper send-off of a dragstrip that had, since 1968, been an integral part of Utah racing. Featuring an oval track and a motocross course, the track had been home to many a racer, but the final night of the final weekend was a celebration of life for the dragstrip. Spectator cars were parked a mile in each direction from the track’s humble parking lot. Rocket and Rockette, the track’s raccoon mascots, were going for broke to stir up the crowd (as if they needed any assistance). Fourteen jet cars were on the property, while more were struggling to get to the track due to a wildfire burning in the distance. One gentleman arose from his deathbed and climbed into a car to see the action for himself one last time, passing on a few days later. The roaring crowd was only beaten by the sheer violence of jet cars and drag racers who threw the rule books out of the window and put on a show worthy of the applause the crowd provided. In short, you could almost consider it a funeral pyre for yet another quarter-mile.
