All these years after Studio Ghibli released Spirited Away in 2001, director Hayao Miyazaki has answered one of the questions about No Face and its true identity, and it’s a very intriguing and deep meaning reveal.
This bit of insight came from Nippon TV, which hosts a primetime movie block each Friday called Kinyo Roadshow. The first movie on the program in 2024 was Spirited Away, and during the event, the network live-tweeted details about the film including this information from Miyazaki:
“Who exactly is No Face? Director Hayao Miyazaki says, ‘There are many people like No Face in our midst… it’s the type of person who wants to latch on to others but doesn’t have a sense of themselves. They are everywhere.’“
Miyazaki shared this bit of info years ago, but it’s one of those things that has been overlooked by a lot of people. I didn’t know about it until today, and No Face’s identity is actually deeper than I expected as he represents those who have no identity of sense of self and adopt new personalities to suit their surrounding. This explains why No Face is transparent and why it has those big personality changes over the course of the film.
