Worldwide Auctioneers completed The Auburn Auction 2023 over Labor Day weekend with 275 vehicles coming up for bidding. When the final hammer fell, the auction tallied total sales of $18.5 million, with an 80-percent sell-through. Nearly 50 of the lots were American muscle cars and among them was a 1965 Dodge Coronet A990 Lightweight two-door sedan. It featured the correct date-coded Hemi V-8 and was restored to nearly its original condition inside and out. It was minimally altered and had all its factory body panels (acid dipped), glass (Corning lightweight), radiator, exhaust, muffler, and 727 TorqueFlite transmission. The bumpers were replaced and replated and the door panels were also replaced. The lightweights are rare—this one is thought to be one of only 101 made and it was thoroughly documented and correct down to the many components that were omitted on these factory drag racers, such as the radio, exterior mirrors, armrests, heater, and more. When the bidding ended, the lean A990 sold for $109,200.
Also finding a new home was a 1969 Chevrolet Corvette L88 convertible. The high-performing L88 was built in exceedingly small numbers—this one was believed to be one of the 116 made for the 1969 model year. This L88 came factory equipped with the M22 “Rock Crusher” four-speed and the nimble Corvette was outfitted with an F41 Special Performance suspension for improved handling. It spent its life as a road tripper, a drag car, and a display vehicle at the 1988 Bloomington Gold Special Collection, making a return in 2008 during that year’s L88 Invasion. Other features included a 4.56:1 Positraction rear end, K66 transistorized ignition, and J56 heavy-duty brakes. The high-performing Corvette sold for $414,750. Pony Pair Sells At Bonhams
Bonhams’ Beaulieu Sale at the National Motor Museum in Southern England featured two Mustangs with UK registries, which were the only “Yanks” to cross the block at this event. The first was a 1966 model that was featured in the Guy Ritchie movie Fortune: Ruse de Guerre. The San Jose built coupe had a fuel-injected 5.0-liter engine with an automatic transmission. It was originally painted blue but was later redone in metallic red with double gray stripes. Other features included a roll bar and a centrally mounted quick-release handbrake, used for the film and its multiple stunt driving scenes. It sold for £16,675 ($20,760).
The other Mustang was a 1968 convertible that crossed the pond in the mid-2000s. Its powerplant was a 302-cu.in./230-hp J-code V-8 mated to a four-speed fitted with a B&M shifter. This Mustang featured a white interior with red carpets and a restored top, and also included GT driving lamps and a Sony radio. This Mustang would realize a final sale of £18,975 ($23,600).
