Ford CEO Jim Farely confirmed that the V8-powered Mustang will not be discontinued anytime soon, leaving the Blue Oval with what seems like the last standing production V8 muscle car, assuming other modern muscle car manufacturers don’t change their tune.
According to a recently published report from Motor1, Ford isn’t fazed by its rivals moving away from V8 power. This comes as exciting news for muscle car fans as the Chevrolet Camaro makes its exit, and Dodge moves on from the Hemi-powered Challengers and Chargers.
“A lot of our competitors have left,” Farley said, also reminding us that both Chevrolet and Dodge have discontinued and reintroduced their muscle cars sporadically over the years while the Mustang model stood strong and production remained consistent.
“If we’re the only one on the planet making a V-8 affordable sports car for everyone in the world, so be it.,” he added.
According to Farley, keeping V8 power in future Mustangs is made possible by the success of the all-electric Mustang Mach-E crossover, which helps offset the emissions of the automaker’s internal-combustion models.
Racing is another factor in Ford’s undying love for the V8. The Blue Oval recently launched several race cars, including an NHRA drag racing nitro funny car, a Mustang-branded NASCAR race car, a pony car for the Australian Supercar Series, and the Mustang GT3 and GT4 racing variants, each powered with a V8. By competing in a plethora of motorsports niches, Ford is able to further develop future production cars. In turn, keeping the road going V8-equipped Mustang in production further supports Ford Performance’s racing initiatives.
“What other car in the world races on six continents on any given weekend? And that’s because we have a V-8 engine,” Farley said.
