Let’s get the obvious out of the way: It’s all Ataru’s fault.
Due to the extremely unlikely instance of a random girl actually agreeing to have a coffee with him, he’s an hour late for his date with Lum, which is even later than he was trying to be. By the time he spots Kousuke and leaves him with the girl in his place, another man has already begun wooing Lum.
Not just any man, a muscular Tarzan-like jungle man who wears nothing but briefs that happen to match Lum’s bikini. Having thoroughly rotted his brain on TV period dramas, this man wishes to make Lum his wife, and when she protests, her electricity has no effect.
That said, when Ataru shows up so late and has the temerity to condemn her for cheating, she decides to make him twist in the wind a bit. She agrees to go with the jungle guy, which only serves to enable his antique romantic ideals.
He lives in a cabin in the middle of a jungle filled with electric plants. If that sounds weird and random … it is. But it’s also highly inventive and amusing, especially the fact the cabin is full of appliances, and while the TV only shows old dramas, he’s able to carry on a dialogue with the characters.
Lum isn’t okay with the guy thinking of her as his wife—she has no intention of marrying him—but she does want to keep punishing Ataru, so she spends the night (after tying up the guy). The next day at school she arrives late and uses her tech to build a portal from the broom closet to the jungle.
Despite being free in the moment, Lum insists she’s being held captive, and can’t escape unless her darling shows he gives enough of a shit to come save her. While Mendou and Kousuke protest Lum being crowded by this jungle guy, Ataru pretends not to care as she goes through the portal and back to the jungle.
Mendou tries to follow, but is electrocuted. Fortunately, his family’s gardener Saizo has some experience with electric plants. He also constantly mistakes Mendou for his long-lost grandson Shingo, and he also has a TV in his greenhouse. On this TV, Lum shows up and cries out for her darling as the jungle guy tries to “tie the knot” with her.
The TV works both ways, as Lum is able to watch as Ataru, along with Mendou, Shinobu, and Kousuke, don shockproof suits and brave the jungle to find her. The jungle guy uses the various electric plants as traps and speeds back to his cabin with Lum, who is powerless to stop him with her own electricity.
While there, Lum finally tells the guy she’d rather die than marry him, leading him to ask why she’s kept him company so long. She doesn’t have the heart to tell him it was to make her darling jealous. Meanwhile, Ataru and the others find a modern building in the jungle which they determine is Saizo’s electric plant project grown out of control.
Yes, the “jungle” is entirely contained on the Mendou family’s backyard. Shinobu also finds a photo of Saizo with a little boy: Shingo, his long lost grandson. As Shingo swings through the electric trees with a tied-up Lum, Ataru awaits them from a branch, dodges Shingo’s kick, tosses him away, and slides down the branch on a big leaf while carrying Lum.
Lum shoots Ataru a big smile that makes him blush despite himself; all she wanted was proof that he cares enough about her to rescue her. Even when Shingo continues to pursue them, Lum is able to keep Ataru airborne with her teeth, and Shingo ends up in a river, which shorts out the TV on his back, thus “killing” his “grandfather”.
Shingo laments that he’s now all alone, but Shinobu tells him not to fret, as they’ll take him to his real grandfather. Unfortunately, the reunion isn’t what they hoped: the senile Saizo just mistakes Mendou for Shingo, while Shingo mistakes Saizo’s TV as his grandfather.
I love it when Urusei gives us a one-story episode, and this one was full of creative twists and turns. It had action, comedy, romance, and a hefty dose of surrealism. And while it would be nice if Ataru learned his lesson not to be too late for his next date with Lum, that’s just not how this show works, so I’m sure he’ll be back on the prowl next week.
