The Canadian government has found that car theft rates are skyrocketing, so much so that a national summit has been called in an attempt to regulate the escalating situation.
A recent recap on theft records provided by the Canadian government revealed a staggering 50% surge of vehicle theft in Quebec for 2022, with Ontario hitting a 48.3-percent jump and Atlantic Canada reporting a 34.5-percent increase. The Canadian Finance and Leasing Association (CFLA) reports that, also in 2022, approximately 9,600 vehicles mysteriously vanished from the greater Toronto area, a concerning 300% increase since 2015.
Many of the stolen vehicles reportedly end up in Africa or the Middle East, which leaves the vehicle owners with little chance of recovering their stolen cars. Meanwhile, the stolen vehicles that remain in Canada are typically used to commit other crimes before being destroyed or discarded. Officials are scheduled to convene for a national summit on February 8th, with a focus on initiating the steps toward slowing vehicle thefts in Canada.
