Hemmings.com is proving to be the perfect platform to sell a collector car to a wide audience via Hemmings Auctions and Hemmings Make Offer listings. This week, we look at a 1977 Ford Bronco that has been fully customized, top to bottom and inside out. We also detail a 1970 Mercury Cyclone GT powered by a booming 429 Cobra Jet V8 engine, and a 2009 Audi R8 5.2 TSI Quattro that gets its oomph from a screaming V10 engine cribbed from Lamborghini. Additional auction capsules below include a 1970 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 that has been restored to original specifications, a 1958 Chevrolet Impala with an older restoration that has held up quite well over the years, and the most refined of the “Big Healeys,” a 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 Mark III BJ8 Convertible.
For the week of January 21 through January 27, a total of 38 listings crossed the Hemmings Auctions block. Including Make Offer listings of previously ended auctions, a total of 24 cars were sold, resulting in a net 63% sell-through rate. An additional 16 cars were sold via direct Make Offer listings.

1958 Chevrolet Impala Sport Coupe

Reserve: $65,000
Selling Price: $71,400
Recent Market Range: $57,000-$79,000
A massive design departure from the high-finned 1957s, this 1958 Chevrolet Impala Sport Coupe (Chevy’s name for its two-door, pillarless hardtop models) was noted by its seller as having been restored prior to his 2002 purchase. In the pictures provided, that redo appeared to have been holding up remarkably well. The interior looked barely used and the engine bay also had that better-than-showroom look to it. Even the underside of the car presented as all but unused. The seller’s notes listing AACA awards from 2009 and 2012 are not surprising given the quality of presentation here. Bidders, too, responded with a solid net sale price inching toward the higher end of recent activity.
1967 Austin-Healey 3000 Mark III Convertible

Reserve: $30,000
Selling Price: $37,275
Recent Market Range: $31,000-$46,000
Including the 100-6 and all 3000 models, the “Big Healey” was in production from 1956 through 1967, with the majority of production exported to the U.S. This 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 Mark III Convertible presented as a nice driver-quality example of the most refined version of a “Big Healey.” Also known by its internal code BJ8, these cars included power-assisted front disc brakes, a full convertible top with roll-up windows, 2+2 seating, a heater and a defroster all as standard equipment. A robust 150-hp inline-six was also part of the package. The car looked to have possibly been previously restored with some minor driving-related wear. Bidding ended appropriately in the middle of the expected range.
1970 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40

Reserve: $30,100
Selling Price: $31,659
Recent Market Range: $24,000-$43,000
Like the Ford Bronco detailed below, Toyota’s FJ40 is often treated as a starting point for customizers who turn them into off-road beasts or show queens. This 1970 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 bucked that trend a bit as it had been restored to stock specifications. Even narrow stock steel wheels were used in the redo, which was noted by the seller as having been a body-off affair that left this FJ “rust-free,” with a clean red finish that extended into the utilitarian interior. Bidders certainly responded to the presentation that included a sparklingly clean engine bay with a stock 3.9-liter OHV F engine and an undercarriage that showed fresh hardware throughout. The net sale price landed within market range.
2009 Audi R8 5.2 FSI Quattro

Reserve Price: $39,999
Selling Price: $50,925
Recent Market Range: $50,000-$75,000
Seemingly a huge departure from its everyday sedans, wagons and SUVs, Audi’s R8 was inspired not by any of its other street cars, but by the R8 prototype sports racer that dominated the 24 Hours of Le Mans from 2000 through 2005. Like its race-only brethren, the roadgoing R8 was a mid-engined, two-seat sports car. While Audi provided its own V8 engines for the 4.2 FSI models, for this 2009 Audi R8 5.2 FSI Quattro, the automaker turned to its corporate cousin Lamborghini to supply the 525-horsepower, high-RPM V10 engine. This example showed just over 61,000 miles on the odometer, likely meaning its prior owners must have enjoyed driving it. It sold at just over the low end of the recent market range.
1977 Ford Bronco Custom

Reserve Price: $65,000
Selling Price: $71,925
Recent Market Range: $53,000-$79,000
Ford’s first-generation Bronco has long been a bit of a blank canvas for customizers. Given the powertrain, suspension, interior, top, wheel and tire options, the original go-anywhere Ford vehicle has a lot to offer. This 1977 Ford Bronco custom was modified in just about every way possible, but still kept its Ford bona fides with the inclusion of a Ford SVO crate 5.0-liter GT-40 HO V8. The Royal Crimson Metallic paint was finished in 2022, high-back bucket seats were installed, and the chassis was also significantly updated, too. Though the bidding did not come close to reserve, the seller and a new buyer were able to make a deal via a post-auction Make Offer listing that was market correct.
1970 Mercury Cyclone GT

Reserve: $45,000
Selling Price: $44,100
Recent Market Range: $38,000-$53,000
As an alternative to a contemporary Dodge Charger R/T or a Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS, this 1970 Mercury Cyclone GT offers a compelling argument, starting with its aggressive gunsight grille and continuing all the way across the body where it finishes with a sleek fastback. Under the hood, this Cyclone GT’s Ram Air-fed 429 Cobra Jet V8, rated at 370 horsepower when new, also stands as a solid counter to any stock Mopar 440 or GM 454. This one had been restored to what appeared to be a high level by a father-and-son team that were selling it. It looked to be as clean underneath as above and while failing to sell on bid, it found a new owner just 11 days later as a Make Offer listing.
