After Rouge is knocked unconscious following her battle against Verde, a mysterious and creepy individual who later introduces himself as the “Puppetmaster” puts her in a tube and has her relive moments of her past, including her earliest days with her brother Gene and father Roy Junghardt. As Rouge falls in and out of the dreamscape, its imagery merges briefly with the real world.
The Puppetmaster is trying to extract some kind of information from Rouge; information she may not even know she has. All she knows is that after their father was killed by the Immortal Nine, her brother told her they had to eliminate them, and she was fine with that, though lately with Sarah and Dr Afdal, she’s questioned whether all the Nine are really so bad.

After the reveal of a blue-haired copy of herself, Rouge wakes up of her own accord, the Puppetmaster delivers a lot of wizened pablum about truth, identity, and freedom, and the next time we see her, she’s been found by Naomi, who got aboard the carnival ship thanks to Eden Varock, AKA “Who are you?”, the guy she met during the truck ride to Wellstown.
Having retrieved both Verde’s Id and Rouge, Naomi is content to go on her way, but she’s impeded by a Harley Quinn’s Nean cousin, who has far superior strength and speed. I get that Naomi is badass for a human, but it escapes me why she keeps getting tangled in fights she can’t possibly win. Fortunately, Rouge is able to pull herself together and fight off the robot clown girl.

When Rouge “deforms” into her Red Gladiator mode, the clown girl siccs a legion of Usurper war machines at her. She’s able to deal with the first few but when they keep coming in waves, she and Naomi are saved by another Gladiator: a black one who is later revealed to be Eden.
Rouge leaps off the carnival ship, which is headed back into space, with Naomi in her arms. The Puppetmaster lets her go in part due to fate but also because he has what he wants: that blue clone (?) of Rouge we saw briefly in her dream.
This episode was a mixed bag. In its efforts to be artfully mysterious, the constant quick cuts and over-repeated cryptic lines like “Code Eve” grew annoying, and the Puppetmaster’s overdone avuncular manner of speech was grating.
It didn’t help that for all the words he used, he didn’t say much of substance beyond asking Rouge if she’s “really her” and telling her to “do what she will.” Finally, my eyes tend to roll whenever an anime whips out carnival aesthetic. A roving space carnival is cool … provided you do anything with it.
I mean … she kinda already did that when she broke off from Naomi? That brings us to the best part of the episode: Rouge and Naomi’s reunion and making up. Naomi even has a bar of chocolate ready for Rouge like I’d hoped, and Rouge ends up splitting it with her.
