Carroll Shelby, a man who needs no introduction, created the Shelby Series 1 sports car in the late-1990s as a modern take on the Shelby Cobra. The production goal of 500 soft-top cars didn’t go as planned, leaving Shelby with several unfinished examples. Now, in celebration of the Series 1 sports car’s 25th anniversary, Wingard Motorsports, under license from Shelby, will take some of the last unfinished cars to build special hardtop versions.
When Carroll Shelby released the Series 1, the plan was the sell 500 soft-top cars, but due to financial constraints, only 249 examples were delivered, none equipped with engines. Leftover bodies and parts are making it possible for a continuation of the Series 1, also referred to as the Series 2 coupe.
Wingard Motorsports will build just 10 of the continuation Shelby Series 2 sports cars, which resemble a modern Shelby Daytona. An improved aluminum honeycomb shell and improved suspension will help lower curb weight and strengthen the car to handle over 1,100 horsepower. The chassis of each will be equipped with inboard pushrod suspension, four-corner six-piston brakes, and 19-inch monoblock wheels.
The engine choice is up to the buyer, but the sports car will come with a paddle-shift six-speed transmission mounted in the rear, which allows for near 50/50 weight distribution. The total weight, including the chosen engine, reportedly equates to under 3,200 pounds, several hundred pounds lighter than the monstrous 2024 Ford Mustang GT. Shelby does have a handful of engine options that can be installed in the rolling chassis, like the Shelby 427 Windsor V8, a supercharged 7.3-liter Ford Godzilla, or buyers could elect to go electric.
Seven composite-bodied Series 2 coupes will be available starting at $385,600, while three aluminum bodies will start at $498,200. Drivetrains start at $83,500. It’s a hefty price to pay to secure a space in the Shelby American Registry, but it’ll be hard to find a car that will activate all the goosebumps during spirited driving as much as a new Shelby sports car.
