We’ve all seen the ads on Facebook and stuff where they are showing a small handheld laser removing rust right off a sheet of steel like it is nothing, and if you are anything like me you have clicked on it in excitement, only to find out that this is a $12,000 machine or MORE! Yeah, that’s $12,000 out of my budget, especially since I try to focus on much more rust free hot rods given my location. But what if you lived somewhere that rust thrives in? Would it be worth it to buy one of these laser machines? And what if it could also cut metal and laser weld metal? Would it be worth it then? Or what if the price was a third less than that? Those are all good questions, but before I could answer that I’d want to know how well it works. Lucky for us, Brent at Halfass Kustoms is putting one to the test.
This 1,500 watt laser machine cleans, cuts, and welds a jillion different metals and Brent got it because he lives in Canada, the home of rust. I am pretty sure that rust was first born in the great white north and migrated through Michigan before border control was a thing. I sure know that Brent spends a lot of time cleaning up rusty bits on his projects and with his recent shop fire he’s got equipment that burned and rusted like mad but that he is hoping he might be able to save. Hence the laser.
