Careless scooter or two-wheeler riders on Indian roads are not too hard to find. We have seen several videos online where people riding recklessly have caused accidents and suffered serious injuries. In most cases, the riders escape with injuries, but there have also been cases where they were not lucky enough to have survived. Here we have an incident from Kerala’s Kasargod district where a careless scooter rider attempting to cross the road without looking at oncoming traffic narrowly escapes getting crushed under a bus. Here is what happened.
The video has been shared by Manorama News on their YouTube channel. The whole incident is explained in this report by the bus driver. The private bus involved in this accident does regular trips from Kasargod to Kannur district in Kerala. As the bus was coming back from Kasargod, a Honda Activa rider suddenly crossed the road from the opposite direction. The scooter rider only looked at the vehicles coming from the opposite direction. He failed to notice the vehicle behind. The scooter rider crossed the road and came right in front of the bus. The bus driver couldn’t do much as there was a board on the side of the road. However, as soon as his bus crossed the road, the driver swerved the bus away from the scooter, and the right side end of the front bumper hit the scooter, and the rider lost control. The rider fell from the scooter, and the front tire was only inches away from the rider’s leg. Thankfully, the alert bus driver managed to stop the bus on time and save the rider.
The rider was in shock as he was not expecting an accident like this when he took the scooter that morning. The video report mentions that the rider admitted that he was not concentrating on the road as he was speaking on the phone. In the short clip that is now circulating online, we can see the driver asking the scooter rider if he is alright. The bus driver was also worried because it was the first time in his lifetime he was getting involved in an accident like this.
The driver also mentions that the bus was maintaining a low speed as a stop was approaching. The accident just happened a few meters before the stop. The bus driver in the report can be heard saying that he could have easily avoided this accident if the road signs board was not present on the road. Extensive roadworks are going on in several parts of the state, and that is probably the reason why we see vacant land on the side of the road.
The driver had called the scooter rider to know how he was doing. The rider was fine. He mentioned that he only had minor bruises and was doing fine. The rider also thanked the driver for saving his life. This is just one of many examples that show how dangerous Indian roads are and why one has to be always alert while driving here. If the bus driver had not applied brakes or swerved the bus on time, the chances of the rider getting crushed were pretty high. Always look for traffic from both sides before joining the road to avoid such accidents and also be patient.
