Lamborghini Showcases Two Rare Classic Sports Cars on the Ice in St. Moritz

The International Concours of Elegance (I.C.E.), was held for the second consecutive year on the frozen lake of St. Moritz in Switzerland on February 23rd and 24th. Automobili Lamborghini was present to showcase two vintage sports cars from its Sant’Agata Bolognese Museum collection: a 1973 Jarama GTS and a 1968 400 GT 2+2.

Lamborghini describes I.C.E. as one of the most captivating events in the world of classic cars. Over 50 cars entered into the concours, which is held on the most magnificent stage: the frozen lake of St. Moritz nestled in the Engadine valley.

“Polo Storico’s participation in The I.C.E. was an opportunity to meet our customers and enthusiasts of classic Lamborghini models in a truly unique setting. This event is close to our own spirit and our way of celebrating the passion for our classic cars: beautiful to see but also fun and exciting to drive. It is an unusual context in which to see a historic Lamborghini, even more so when these are cars that are usually admired in our museum,” Alessandro Farmeschi, Global After Sales Director of Automobili Lamborghini, stated in the press release.

The 1973 Jarama GTS arrived at the event, complete with ski rack, skis and toboggan, ready for a weekend in the snow. Originally revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1970 as Lamborghini’s new GT 2+2 that would replace the Islero, the Jarama GT sported an ultra-modern body style designed by Carrozzeria Bertone. An ultimate Gran Turismo car, the comfortable cabin could accommodate two adults and two children in the back seat, plus several pieces of luggage. Out of the luxury sports car’s characteristic angular design and stylistic features, the most unique detail on the Jarama is arguably the “eyelids” that cover the front headlights when the vehicle is not in use.

The Jarama GTS was added to the lineup in 1972, featuring a more powerful version of the four-liter V12, now capable of 365-horsepwoer, plus and a handful of aesthetic changes such as a raised air intake on the hood, air intakes on the front fenders and newly designed Campagnolo wheel rims. The interior sports updated seats with contoured backrests to allow more room for the rear passengers. An added aluminum fascia covers the dashboard, the secondary buttons were re-arranged, and the car now came standard with power steering. According to Lamborghini, production lasted until 1976 and a total of 327 units were produced: 177 GTs and 150 GTSs.

The 1968 400 GT 2+2 joined the 1973 Jarama GTS on the ice but left all the winter toys at home to fully showcase its lines, which were slightly revised when compared to its 350 GT brethren, most notably in the rear. Lamborghini states that the rear end was raised by 6.5 centimeters to become a 2+2, then was equipped with a 320-horsepower inline-four V12, the same engine that appears in the Jarama GTS, just with a little less juice. The 400 GT adopted the Lamborghini-designed gearbox and differential, and the rear suspension was also revised.

Road & Track magazine called the 400 GT “the best GT we’ve ever had a chance to test” in its October 1966 issue. This statement reportedly pleased Ferruccio Lamborghini who, began his venture to create the best GT in the world just three years earlier.

Both GT vehicles from Lamborghini’s Sant’Agata Bolognese Museum collection are important cars in the company’s history. The Italian automaker writes, “Although representative of two different historical decades, the 1960s with its rounded shapes and the 1970s with its characteristic angular design, both Lamborghini 2+2s featured in St. Moritz are equipped with the same power plant: the legendary Lamborghini 4-liter V-12, with twin overhead camshafts in the front longitudinal position.”
