Citroen, the French automaker known for its distinctive design and emphasis on comfort, is developing the C3X, a crossover sedan specifically tailored for emerging markets like India and South America. This unique offering blends the sleekness of a sedan with the practicality and ruggedness of an SUV, aiming to capture the attention of car buyers who seek both style and functionality.

While recent spy shots, heavily camouflaged, revealed glimpses of the C3X undergoing testing, these new renderings offer a clearer picture of what the production model might look like. The renderings depict a car that seamlessly merges the familiar face of the new Citroen C3 with a liftback tail similar to that of the EU-market C4 X. Additionally, it has a higher ground clearance and protective plastic cladding, contributing to a more robust appearance.
This unique design approach positions the C3X as a compelling alternative to established sedan players in the Indian market, such as the Hyundai Verna, Honda City, Skoda Slavia, and Volkswagen Virtus. The C3X aims to attract car buyers seeking a car that offers both the driving dynamics of a sedan and the practicality of an SUV. Borrowing heavily from the new C3, the C3X’s interior is expected to feature a prominent 10-inch infotainment touchscreen positioned atop the center console, providing a modern and user-friendly experience.
Under the hood, the C3X is likely to utilize the proven 1.2-liter turbocharged PureTech three-cylinder engine, generating 108 horsepower. Transmission options are expected to include a manual gearbox and a torque-converter automatic. Furthermore, rumours suggest a fully electric version could follow suit in 2025, potentially mirroring the specifications of the new eC3, catering to the growing demand for electric vehicles in emerging markets.
Citroen entered the Indian market in 2021 with the launch of the Citroen C5 Aircross SUV. This was followed by the C3 hatchback in 2022, and the C3X marks the brand’s fourth offering in the country. While sales figures haven’t yet reached their full potential, Citroen is actively expanding its dealership network, aiming to provide a comprehensive customer experience and build brand loyalty.

The C3X is expected to launch in the second half of 2024, potentially priced between Rs 12-20 lakh. This price range positions the C3X competitively in the Indian market, making it an attractive option for a wider range of car buyers. With its unique design, practical features, and competitive pricing strategy, the Citroen C3X has the potential to carve a niche for itself in the ever-evolving Indian car market.
Citroen is slowly but steadily expanding operations in India. However, the French automaker has a long way to go before car buyers consider it over other more popular brands. Both the C3 hatch, and the C3 AirCross have been slow sellers at best. The C5 AirCross is another rarity on Indian roads. The C3X sedan, with its polarizing design, may just bee what the doctor ordered to make Citroen stand out on the road.
