A handful of 2024 BMW X5 and X7 models are being recalled in the United States due to an issue with the instrument display that could adversely affect how the airbag deploys in the event of a crash.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) recall notice reveals that a passenger airbag module insert may not have been properly attached to the underside of the instrument panel because the panel’s resin composition does not meet specifications. As such, the deployment of the airbag could be impaired and pieces of the instrument panel could separate in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

The recall impacts five 2024 BMW X5 sDrive40i and X5 xDrive40i models built on January 29, 2024, and three examples of the 2024 X7 xDrive40i, also built on January 29 this year.
BMW became aware of a potential issue on January 27, 2024, when a supplier noticed the instrument panel did not meet quality standards. The composition of the resin used in the production of the panel was then checked and found to not meet quality standards. A stop-ship order was issued at a production site in February and BMW soon decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall. The carmaker is not aware of any customer complaints, concerns, or warranty claims related to the issue, nor does it know of any incidents or injuries caused by it.
Owners of the eight BMW X5 and X7 models will be alerted to the recall on April 16. Dealerships have been told to replace the instrument panel free of charge.
