As things age they tend to slow down, right? Athletes lose a step of performance, cars give up some of their horsepower through wear, and things just generally soften up. But do thy always? These guys wanted to see and the method they chose was to stick a 180,000 mile 1989 Shelby CSX onto the dyno to check its power production versus what the car would have made stock. The results here are pretty interesting, especially for those of you who love the pluggy little Chrysler little turbo engines of the 1980s and early 1990s.
The CSX is a pretty rare car, especially in 1989 form because it was their first year. Only available in red with the gold wheels, this is VIN #483 for those of you collectors out there. We get a good tour of the car and some history before the guys strap it down and hammer the gas on the rollers. Don’t worry, the connecting rods stay in and the car is not harmed (as best we can tell) by making these pulls. The little variable nozzle turbocharger makes about 12 psi of boost and the engine was rated for 175hp when brand nw from the factory.
So, after more than 30 years, 180,000 miles and who knows how much hard driving, does it lose a bunch of power? Knowing it made 175 stock, make a guess before pressing play to see where this one lands on your wow-meter.
