Peugeot is the #1 brand in Spain for the first time since December 2021.
New car sales in Spain continue on their good form in February at +9.9% year-on-year to 81,348 units, leading to a year-to-date result up 8.7% to 150,033. However the YTD cume remains off -22.8% on pre-pandemic levels. Like last month, sales to rental companies are the main engine of growth in Spain with deliveries up 89.7% YoY to 18,015 and up 85.1% year-to-date to 25,253. Private sales are up 7.2% to 34,787 for the month and up 6.7% year-to-date to 68,824. As for company sales, they slide down -10.9% to 28,546 and are off -6.6% YTD to 55,956. In terms of regions, Madrid (+19.8%) is the most dynamic and also the main regional force at 47.6% of the national total. Murcia (+17.9%), Galicia (+17.5%) and Comunidad Valenciana (+17.4%) also impress.
In the brands aisle, Peugeot (+7.1%) scores the pole position for the first time since December 2021 and compared to #5 in January and #6 over the Full Year 2023. The French carmaker topples Toyota (+0.8%) bumped down to #2. Volkswagen (+8.7%) almost matches the market and rallies back up five spots to #3 overall. It is followed by Renault (+17%) in excellent shape at #4 vs. #10 last month while Seat (-13.8%) is in difficulty at #5. Nissan (+70.8%) delivers the largest year-on-year gain in the Top 10 and ranks #10 this month vs. #17 over the Full Year 2023. Citroen (+20.5%) and Hyundai (+13.3%) also beat the market in the remainder of the Top 10. Below, MG (+133.8%), BMW (+82.4%), Volvo (+58.5%), Tesla (+52%) and Jeep (+30.7%) shine.
Model-wise, the Dacia Sandero (-3%) lodges a fourth win in the past 5 months despite a small year-on-year fall. The Nissan Qashqai (+84.7%) is up 10 spots on its January and FY2023 ranking to #2 overall with 2.7% share. It distances the Seat Arona (-18.7%) up three ranks on last month and the Peugeot 2008 (+1.4%) up four to #4. The rest of the Top 10 all beat the market with at least double-digit gains. The MG ZS (+457.2%) is by far the most dynamic but drops seven spots on January to #10. The next best performers are the Toyota Corolla (+44.6%) and Fiat 500 (+33.2%), with the Renault Captur (+16.9%), Hyundai Tucson (+13.3%) and Seat Ibiza (+10.6%) a little more discreet.
