The French automaker Citroen’s all-electric eC3 was recently tested by Global NCAP for its safety ratings. Sadly, the eC3 managed to score an appalling safety rating of 0 stars for adults and only 1 star for child occupants. Global NCAP stated that Citroen, which was once known for safety, has fallen short with this electric hatchback. The eC3 is the latest made-in-India cars to be tested by Global NCAP
Citroen eC3 Safety Ratings
According to the reports from Global NCAP, the eC3 managed to score a total of 20.86 points out of 34 in adult occupant protection. The report says that when the car crashed head-on during the frontal impact.
The protection for the driver’s and passenger’s heads and necks was good. However, their chests weren’t protected well. Also, the report highlighted that the driver’s knee was also not adequately protected. On the other hand, the passenger’s knee was protected well.
Additionally, it has also been stated by GNCAP that on a side impact, the protection for the head was just marginal. The same was the case with chest protection. The report added that the abdomen and pelvis were well-protected. GNCAP highlighted that the side impact results were not as good as the front crash test. Hence, the eC3 lost a star in the overall safety rating.
Global NCAP also mentioned that the eC3 didn’t undergo a side pole crash test. This was because it does not come equipped with side airbags. The organization added that it also does not meet safety requirements for Electronic Stability Control (ESC). Additionally, it also does not meet pedestrian protection standards.
Child Occupant Protection
Coming to the safety of children in the Citroen eC3, it has been reported by Global NCAP that the eC3 scored 10.55 out of 49 points. For a 3-year-old child seat installed facing forward using the adult seat belt, the eC3 didn’t provide enough protection in a frontal crash.
This led to excessive forward movement and head contact with the vehicle interior. On the other hand, an 18-month-old child in a child seat had good protection during a frontal impact, preventing head exposure. However, during a side impact, the head was exposed, resulting in lower scores.
GNCAP noted that the eC3 lacks some safety features for child passengers. It does not get a 3-point seat belt for all seats. Instead, it comes equipped with a lap belt for the rear middle passenger.
It also misses out on ISOFIX anchorages. Due to these missing features, points were deducted from the overall child protection score. Additionally, the car only has one suitable position for a universal child seat.
Global NCAP Official Statement
Alejandro Furas, Global NCAP Secretary-General, stated, “This is an appalling result from Stellantis. PSA was once a leader on safety, but now, as part of the Stellantis group, the manufacturer appears to have taken a major backward step. We hope that this apparent negative trend is corrected globally as a matter of urgency.”
Meanwhile, David Ward, Executive President of the Towards Zero Foundation, said, “This result from Stellantis is of serious concern, not only for consumers in the Indian market but also for those in emerging economies around the world.”
