Most aftermarket performance-oriented connecting rod bearings are marked “Upper” and Lower” to be used in these respective positions. Stock replacement rod bearings are generally not marked. The reason for the position markings with aftermarket rod bearings is to position the bearings to accommodate the generous radius used on the cheek side of the connecting rod to clear the larger radius on the crankshaft’s rod journal.

This radius, sometimes called an undercut, is used to improve crank strength and is matched with a generous radius machined into one side of the big end of the connecting rod’s big end. To prevent the rod bearing from contacting this radius and tearing away bearing material that will then travel through the engine, all high-performance rod bearings are designed and marked to be used in their proper position. An “Upper” bearing half will be used in the main part of the rod while the “Lower” is intended to be used in the rod cap. If a bearing half is inserted improperly, the bearing will likely wear on the crank radius. This usually will not damage the crank. However, a used oil analysis test will come back with a warning of excessive bearing wear.
