Hemmings.com Weekly Round Up: Mercury Woodie, Rare Prewar MG, and Ferrari 348

This week’s round up of cars successfully sold on Hemmings Auctions and Hemmings Make Offer take us nearly around the world, from the U.S. to Japan to Great Britain and Italy. A rare flathead V8-powered Mercury woodie wagon starts the list and is followed by a Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40, one of the all-time great off-road vehicles. A pair of open-top classic British sports cars also occupy this list in the form of a very rare MG Midget TA Tickford three-position coupe and a Morgan Plus 4 with a Rover engine under its long hood. An all-black Ferrari 348, powered by a high-rpm, quad-cam, 32-valve V8 also does a fair job of representing collector cars from the Nineties here. Finally, a late prewar Cadillac Series Sixty Two Convertible Coupe brings us back to another machine with a flathead V8.

For the week of March 17 through March 23, a total of 40 listings crossed the Hemmings Auctions block. Including Make Offer listings of previously ended auctions, a total of 27 cars were sold, resulting in a net 68% sell-through rate. An additional 12 cars were sold via direct Make Offer listings.

1950 Mercury Woodie Station Wagon

1950 Mercury Woodie Station Wagon, side view

Reserve: $57,000

Selling Price: $72,972

Recent Market Range: $58,000-$75,000

Mercury made two-door woodie wagons for a mere three years, with total production between 1949 and 1951 adding up to just 13,602 examples built. The lowest volume year was 1950, when just 1,746 such cars with mahogany and ash wood paneling and trim were built. The vast majority of Mercurys from this period on the collector car market today are some kind of custom, with lots of lead sleds crossing the block. That said, this 1950 Mercury Woodie Station Wagon, powered by the correct 255-cu.in. flathead V8, sold strongly and very near the top of the expected market range. The seller noted a body-off restoration of unknown date; in the photos provided, it appeared to be holding up well.

1976 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser

Reserve: $35,000

Selling Price: $47,250

Recent Market Range: $26,000-$40,000

Toyota imported its iconic FJ40 to the U.S. from 1960 all the way through 1983. It also produced the capable off-roader for many other markets throughout the world. This 1976 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser was a U.S.-market vehicle from new, originally delivered to Alaska for a military contractor. The listing indicated it was refinished in Cygnus White in 2008 and it had also been treated to such refurbishments as replacement gray vinyl for the interior seats. Upgrades from its largely stock condition included a mild lift kit, an auxiliary fuel tank, power steering and a Warn winch. Presented as unrestored, but otherwise well maintained, it achieved a strong result 35% better than the reserve.

1938 MG TA Tickford

Asking Price: $75,000

Selling Price: $65,100

Recent Market Range: $48,000-$77,000

MG introduced the TA Midget in 1936, beginning its successful line of T-type models that continued in production to the final TF in 1955. Among an estimated 3,000 or so TA’s made, a mere 252 were Tickford models that featured a bespoke Salmons & Sons three-position top, configurable as a coupe with the roof closed, Sedanca style with the roof open over the seats, or fully open with the top all the way down. This 1938 MG TA Tickford, noted as being imported to the U.S. in 2007, appeared to be in excellent driver-quality condition, with some wear notable in the seats and carpets. At a net sale price of $65,100 as a direct Make Offer listing, it sold in the expected market range.

1941 Cadillac Series Sixty-Two Convertible Coupe

Reserve: $46,000

Selling Price: $54,075

Recent Market Range: $32,000-$50,000

Cadillac featured an all-new style for 1940 that was a harbinger of future designs. It also proved to be a success in the showroom with Cadillac sales jumping to a then-record 66,000 cars. This 1941 Cadillac Series Sixty-Two Convertible Coupe was powered by a 346-cu.in. flathead V8, as were all Cadillacs that year. It featured an older restoration that appeared to be holding up quite well, including the red exterior and tan leather seats. Even the engine bay appeared well sorted, though it did show some fasteners with light surface rust. The underside had overspray visible and there was surface rust on the springs. The net price of $54,075 looks to be a strong result for the seller here.

1994 Morgan Plus 4

1994 Morgan Plus 4, front quarter, top down

Reserve: $36,500

Selling Price: $38,850

Recent Market Range: $31,000-$44,000

Morgan manufactured the Plus 4 across multiple generations from 1950 all the way to 2020, though with some periods during that time when it did not produce the iconic sports car. During the long production period, Morgan sourced engines from Standard, Fiat, Ford, Triumph and Rover, the latter of which supplied the T16 2.0-liter DOHC 16-valve engine that powered this 1994 Morgan Plus 4 Series 3. The listing for this example included notes about new carpeting, leather upholstery, fabric top, tonneau and tires, along with an indication that the paint, engine and five-speed transmission are all original. The net $38,850 selling price is right in the range where Morgan Plus 4s have been trading for years.

1990 Ferrari 348 TS

Asking Price: $50,000

Selling Price: $45,150

Recent Market Range: $44,000-$65,000

A successor to the 308/328 series of two-seat, V8-powered sports cars, the 348 debuted in 1989 with styling cues very clearly drawn from Ferrari’s range-topping 12-cylinder Testarossa. Though company sales would falter just a couple of years later as a global recession put immense pressure on exotic car manufacturers, in 1990 the 348 helped Ferrari reach then-record sales of 4,309 cars produced. This 1990 Ferrari 348 TS sold for a net price of $45,150 as a direct Make Offer sale, over 90% of its asking price and within the going market range for a sports car with a 296-horsepower V8 that has a redline over 7,000 rpm. Black on black with a removable roof section, it showed 40,059 miles on its odometer.
