Where To Find These Parts: Starfire Brake Booster, 1935 Ford Rear Axle, Fury Buzzer, Or Hudson Latch Springs?

Starfire Brake Booster

I have a customer looking for a master cylinder and brake booster for his 1977 Oldsmobile Starfire. Do you know where I can find these parts, either new or rebuilt?

– Jean Desroches, via Hemmings.com

The same booster and master cylinder was used on 1976-’80 Buick Skyhawks, Chevy Monzas, Olds Starfires and Pontiac Sunbirds. The booster also fit 1975-’77 Chevy Vegas and Pontiac Astres, but the master cylinder was different. Rebuilt boosters are usually available through A-1 Cardone, part number 54-71300, however they are currently out of stock due to a lack of rebuildable core units. You can have your original unit rebuilt by sending to Power Brake X-Change or Karps Power Brake Service and Cylinder Sleeving. The master cylinder is available from most auto parts stores. NAPA shows a rebuilt unit #P2292, which can be ordered and available within a few days. NAPA also shows a new cylinder, part number M2292, which is currently on factory backorder.

1935 Ford Rear Axle Wanted

I need a rear axle assembly for my 1935 Ford pickup. Other than ’35, are there any other years that will bolt in directly or without much tweaking? What ratios were available?

– Alfred Trotta, via Hemmings.com

The original axle housings were 59.5-inches drum-to-drum and the spring mounts were 48.25 inches apart. An identical housing in terms of wheel width and spring mounts can only be obtained from a 1935 or ’36 Ford pickup. You can use 1937-’41 truck housings, but the spring mounts are ¼-inch wider. Most pickups came with a 4.11:1 rear end ratio during those years. Both axles were 32.85 inches long and 18-spline from 1935-’38. The 1939-’41 axles were also 32.85 inches longbut only 16-spline. Complete used axles for 1935-’41 Ford light-duty trucks are available from Rocky Mountain Relics. If you are looking to upgrade to a more modern rear, the 1994-’01 8.8-inch Ford Explorer housing is the correct width at 59.5 inches, but the suspension, brake hydraulics, wheels (4½-inch bolt pattern), and the driveshaft would also have to be changed.

Mopar Key Buzzer Switch

I have a 1977 Plymouth Fury and I recently encountered an electrical problem – it took me a month to identify the part that failed. The issue is the headlamp-warning and key-in buzzer stopped working. I discovered, by accident, that if I banged on the steering wheel, it worked temporarily. Further investigation determined a failed switch in the steering column. My problem is, I can’t locate the part in my factory parts book. My factory service manual identifies it as the “ignition key buzzer switch”.

That part, by name, is not listed in the parts book. I’m trying to get the factory part number so I can find the correct replacement. The column is non-tilt and is a column-shift automatic. I hope you can help, thank you.

– John Omasta, via Hemmings.com

The original Mopar part number was #3747194 for non-tilt steering columns. It was later superseded by Mopar#4131552 and was used in various Chrysler models until 1989. We know of no aftermarket manufacturers offering this switch at this time. You can purchase an NOS Chrysler switch from Hilltop Auto Parts or Blue Star Performance.

Hudson Terraplane Door Latch Springs

My car is a 1936 Hudson Terraplane with two suicide doors, and it has one bad door-latch spring. The end of the spring has broken off. If I can’t find a spring, I’ll have to buy a whole latch. This is for the driver’s door, but it probably doesn’t matter which door it goes on. Any tips will be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

– Jeffery Osier, via email

These can be bought in the aftermarket. The Dorman replacement part number is DL-18 and fits 1931-’36 Hudsons. It is the same spring that fits latches for the 1933-’34 Ford, 1938-’42 Nash, 1932-’34 Mopar, and 1939-’42 Packard. You can buy them from Don’s Auto Shop, which currently sells them on eBay as vendor “carp-2476”. Eckler’s/Mac’s Auto Parts also sells them under part number 32-14928-1 for the 1933-’34 Ford equivalent for about $6 each.
