“Listen I don’t want to mess a kids hopes up right because you know he’s playing a hell of a basketball, but you know I’m pretty sure whoever drafts him in the lottery is probably going to get fired within a few years after that draft pick. How he plays the game is not how the game is being played today, so that same player you can find in the second round. So I’m pretty sure he will slip because how is he going to play defense in the NBA now.”
Central to Arenas’ apprehension is his uncertainty about Zach Edey’s defensive capabilities against established NBA big men like Nikola Jokic and Joel Embiid. He adamantly asserted that selecting Edey in the lottery would be a squandered opportunity, despite the towering center’s seven-foot-four frame.

In light of his recent accomplishments, a recent mock draft by Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo of ESPN projected Edey as the 13th overall pick, potentially elevating him into the coveted lottery range. Citing his exceptional showing in the Elite Eight, they even speculated that he could crack the top 10.
While debates persist regarding Edey’s NBA potential, ESPN’s analysis underscores that he is widely regarded as a first-round lock by most NBA teams, barring any unforeseen setbacks. Edey’s impressive season statistics for Purdue, averaging 25 points, 12.2 rebounds, two assists, and 2.2 blocks per game with a 62.4 percent shooting accuracy, further bolster his draft prospects.
