The Blue Oval has reportedly filed a trademark for a legendary name out of its motorsports past. The names “Ford RS200” and “RS200: are now filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office, but why would Ford opt to revive the moniker?
The information is based on a report from AutoGuide, which included screen shots of the patent information.
Back in 2021, Murat Gueler, Ford’s European design chief, did mention that the automaker wanted to bring back old names for future cars, which will create a nostalgic effect for customers while celebrating Ford’s heritage.
That said, Ford could be considering building an all-wheel-drive off-road worthy sports car for the modern day as a throwback to the famous Group B rally car and its homologation models. After all, the mid-engine homologation special has become a highly desirable choice for collectors. Designed to dominate tough terrains at speed, the off-road sports cars offered unrestrained performance and a sense of danger that can satisfy even the most fervent rally racing fans. With under 200 examples built and around 140 known to remain, collectors are willing to pay upwards of $500,000 to own one of the homologation classics.
It’s important to note that Ford Performance is still active in rally racing, with its M-Sport Ford Puma Hybrid Rally1 in the World Rally Championship (WRC). This could spur a special edition RS200 for the roadworthy Puma crossover.
While the trademark could mean a new off-road focused compact sports car, let’s not get our hopes up just yet as the Mustang Mach-E Rally already covers that niche in EV form. It could go the supercar route, but the Mustang GTD has that covered as well. Gas-powered off-road sports coupe, anyone? We can only hope, however the Mach-E GT Performance Edition’s 480 horsepower and 634 foot-pounds of torque would be hard to beat.
There’s always a chance that the RS200 designation could be applied to a special edition or trim level of an existing model. Last year, rumors floated around the internet about Ford potentially offering a sportier two-door version of its Mustang Mach-E crossover, but will the brand really slap an RS200 badge on a Mach-E after all the ruckus caused by using the Mustang name for a crossover EV?
There’s always a possibility that Ford is trademarking the iconic name so other companies can’t take it for future use on new models. As of this writing, your guess is as good as ours. We want to hear from you: What are you hoping will come of Ford’s recent RS200 trademark?
