6’7” guard from TCU will play his fifth year with Cooley and the Hoyas

Your Georgetown Hoyas have secured the commitment of their first transfer this offseason in TCU’s Micah Peavy. The 6’7” Peavy started all games this season and was All-Big 12 Honorable Mention. He is known as a good defender and solid shooter. Peavy started his career at Texas Tech under Chris Beard before playing the next three seasons for the Horned Frogs under Jamie Dixon. For what it’s worth, he scored 5 points at Georgetown in 2021 and 6 points in their game in December 2023.

Peavy had previously relayed that he was entering his name in the NBA Draft process, but his most recent comments indicate a commitment to come to Georgetown.

Peavy is really known for his ability to defend all positions. Peavy undoubtedly has professional aspirations, especially with his size and athleticism, so helping to set the defensive tone at Georgetown can lift all boats. His teammates talk about him as a leader, especially on that end of the floor.

Multiple reports Tuesday morning indicate that TCU guard/forward Micah Peavy will enter the transfer portal while also going through the NBA Draft process. Peavy has spent the last three seasons with TCU and averaged 10.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game during the 2023-24 campaign, where he was an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention. A former four-star recruit, Peavy began his career at Texas Tech, spending one season in Lubbock.

Should Peavy return to the college game, he’ll have one season of eligibility remaining. The 6-foot-8, 215-pounder from Cibolo, Texas played in 98 games with 51 starts over his three years with the Horned Frogs. Peavy helped lead TCU to a 21-13 overall record and a third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament.

After beginning college as a non-shooter, Peavy has turned into a moderate threat from the outside. The 6-foot-8 guard/forward shot 31.0 percent on 2.6 triples per game. Prior to this season, Peavy shot 16.7 percent from three as a sophomore and 26.7 percent as a junior.

Aside from his improved shooting, Peavy demonstrated an upgraded passing and ball-handling ability. In TCU’s win over Arizona State, Peavy recorded a triple-double, the third such instance in TCU basketball history. On the season, the fourth-year wing averaged 2.6 assists per game. Peavy’s offense is come and go as he doesn’t have a deep ball-handling bag nor enough confidence to let it rip from beyond the arc. What he does well is attack the rim and play in transition. Too often in the half court, Peavy would pump-fake, then drive into a secondary defender and kick it out—restarting the process.

Where the senior guard shines is on defense. A jumbo-sized guard, Peavy has the innate ability to slide his feet and stay square in front of virtually any matchup. Whether it be a shifty 6-foot guard or a bulkier 6-foot-9 forward, Peavy never seems to be outmatched. He doesn’t boast the highest steal numbers, but that’s likely because Peavy is more focused on staying in front of his opponent rather than gambling for steals. His high-end athleticism and lower-body strength allow him to cut off drives, jump passing lanes, and contest shots at the rim.

Peavy said he chose Ed Cooley and the Hoyas over offers from Houston, Kansas, Kansas State, and Creighton, according to On3’s Joe Tipton.

Peavy managed to pull of just the third triple-double in TCU program history with 13 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists against Arizona State. A dynamic defender, he tallied three or more steals in a game five times, including a season-high four against Texas A&M Commerce…

He stuffed the stat sheet with a double-double against the then No. 1 Houston Cougars on March 14th, 13 points and 11 rebounds. During his junior campaign (2022-2023), he played in 30 of 35 games, making eight starts. Peavy averaged 7.0 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. He was also named to the All-Tournament in the Emerald Coast Classic after averaging 12 points and 8.5 rebounds to lead TCU to the title.

Peavy spent his freshman season with the Texas Tech Red Raiders, starting in 25 of 29 games, averaging 5.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game.

Defensively, Peavy is a strong defender who can guard both guards and forwards. His blend of size and athleticism allows him to defend at a high level in one-on-one matchups, and his length makes him a threat to jump passing lanes and provide some rim protection too at times.

Kansas could certainly use a wing with Peavy’s size. He is exceptional on the defensive end and a respectable rebounder. His gritty play style is exactly what Coach Self looks for in a forward, and he and Riley Kugel could compete for a spot in the starting rotation if Furphy leaves.

His offense could still use some work, and his 26.7% lifetime 3-point percentage leaves something to be desired. However, he hit threes at a career-high 31.0% clip in the 2023-24 season and has shown considerable improvements over the past few campaigns. Peavy’s profile is similar to that of McCullar when he entered the portal two years ago.

In addition to his time in Fort Worth, he gained even more experience in the Big 12 after beginning his collegiate career at Texas Tech. Georgetown has been picking up steam Peavy in recent days, but with Kansas now in the mix, it will be interesting to see how the rest of his recruitment plays out.

Peavy’s 26-point outing against Kansas State this past February 17th was tallied at a season-high and concluded with a 75-72 victory. He also managed nine rebounds and two assists, as well as 50 percent from the field. He scored a total of 372 points, snatched 168 rebounds, and threw 89 assists during the ‘23-’24 slate.

The former Horned Frog played in 34 games, averaging 29 minutes, with his most minutes reaching 34 against Oklahoma this past March 13th and flooring at 21 minutes on two separate occasions (November 6th and February 12th).

A runner in transition who elevates off the ground with ease and is a capable shooter from the catch-and-shoot position or off the dribble. Peavy’s passing is another key skill that makes him a well-rounded piece for Coach Cooley and staff.

The talented, versatile wing has one more year of eligibility remaining and will also explore the NBA Draft. Peavy had the best season of his career with 10.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists while being the Horned Frogs’ best perimeter defender at 6-foot-8.

Peavy started his career at Texas Tech and then transferred to TCU in 2021. He was a key reserve in his first two seasons, averaging over 20 minutes a night before he started all 34 games this season.

One NBA scout compared Peavy to Spurs forward Julian Champagnie, an undrafted wing with a similar build to Peavy that has found a role in San Antonio with 49 starts this season. If Peavy does decide to enter the portal, the door will remain open for him to return to Fort Worth.

Following his triple-double to help lead TCU to a 79-59 win over Arizona State, Micah Peavy was named Big 12 Player of the Week on Monday. It was his first ever Big 12 weekly honor.

With 13 points, a career-high 12 rebounds and career-high 10 assists, the senior guard became just the third ever Horned Frog to record a triple-double, joining Kurt Thomas and Kenrich Williams. To get the tenth triple-double in the NCAA the season, Peavy’s final assist came in the final two minutes to Essam Mostafa for a layup.
