The First Omen actually ended up being a surprisingly good horror movie! I wasn’t expecting it to be as good or as scary as it was.
The movie tells a solid story that sets up the events of the classic 1976 film The Omen, and on that journey, some very scary and dark demented things happen, which is what you’d expect from a film about the coming of the Antichrist!
One of these scenes affected the crew members so much that some of them walked off the set in horror while they were shooting it.
The scene takes place near the end of the film, as Nell Tiger Free’s Margaret Daino approaches a church and she just lets go, like a demon had taken over her and she starts to contort in both pain and ecstasy. I can definitely see why some people would find it uncomfortable.
Free talked about this scene saying: “There’s something so satisfying about releasing parts of yourself that, society-wise, you should keep hidden. It’s this real animalistic rage that I tapped into and let come out, so it felt amazing. It really did.”
I remember turning to my friend who I watched the movie with as said to him during this scene, “Sometimes it must be really hard to be an actor.” It’s a pretty wild scene!
She went on to say: “It was really satisfying to see a couple of people walk off set because they were so uncomfortable. People wouldn’t look me in the eye afterwards because they thought I was evil. So I loved the experience. It felt real and like we did something cool.”
The movie tells the story of the young woman who gives birth to the Antichrist and the son of the Devil. “When a young American woman is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church, she encounters a darkness that causes her to question her own faith and uncovers a terrifying conspiracy that hopes to bring about the birth of evil incarnate.”
If you enjoy horror movies, and you’re a fan of the original film, The First Omen is a movie worth experiencing on the big screen. It delivers some wild craziness.
The First Omen stars Nell Tiger Free (Servant), Tawfeek Barhom (Mary Magdalene), Sonia Braga (Kiss of the Spider Woman), Ralph Ineson (The Witch, Onyx the Fortuitous), and Bill Nighy (Living).
The film is directed by Arkasha Stevenson, based on characters created by David Seltzer (The Omen), with a story by Ben Jacoby (Bleed) and a screenplay written by Tim Smith and Arkasha Stevenson and Keith Thomas (Firestarter).
