Vauxhall Cars Ltd. of Bedfordshire in the United Kingdom, now a division of Stellantis, is one of Britain’s oldest motor manufacturers. Until its change in ownership, Vauxhall formed the face of General Motors in England—the Detroit giant having bought it in 1925. Originally a producer of luxury vehicles, Vauxhall went on to develop a remarkably rounded selection of models and styles, especially in the years following World War II: the timeline for this very usable recounting of Vauxhall’s models from that heady era.
This compact, 160-page narrative tells the postwar tale of Vauxhall in chronological order, devoting a chapter of several pages for each model, with color illustrations, including period Vauxhall advertising, that denote the cars’ variations. A comprehensive, Hemmings-style specification box accompanies each description, furnishing easy bites of useful information. The text takes the reader through a series of Chevette and Opel Ascona variants, including commercial vehicles and performance cars that were a heck of a lot more interesting than the grim Chevettes we were stuck with here. An examination of Vauxhalls in competition also forms an integral part of this story. The book is an easily managed and comprehensive look at GM cars that are familiar to us, and yet distant. It’s just the ticket for car-spotting while you screen older episodes of Midsomer Murders.

He came from a place where drag racing on a strip was almost unheard of and with an expanse of ocean separating him from the rest of the sport.
