Oh Fishticks! Ferrari 488 Pista Plunges Into River

  • A silver Ferrari 488 Pista was totaled in Switzerland after falling into the Simme river.
  • The supercar reportedly collided with another vehicle traveling in the same direction.
  • The driver escaped without serious injuries although he had to wait 40 minutes in the water before being rescued.

Turns out Porsche 911s aren’t the only ones with a penchant for unplanned aquatic adventure. A Ferrari 488 Pista ended up half-submerged in a Swiss river after a little disagreement with another car. While the driver escaped unscathed (aside from a potentially bruised ego), the Italian stallion seems destined for the scrapyard thanks to a hefty dose of H2O.

The accident took place at 3:30 p.m. last Tuesday in an area called Garstattlast. According to local media, the silver Ferrari reportedly collided with another vehicle that was traveling in the same direction, from Zweisimmen to Boltigen.

Following the crash, the Ferrari driver appears to have lost control of the supercar, sending it on a scenic detour straight into the Simme River. A video shot by an eyewitness and shared by media outlet 20 Minutes shows the nose of the 488 Pista sticking out of the water. The rest of the car, however – interior, engine, the whole shebang – seems to be enjoying a rather involuntary baptism.

Thankfully, the driver didn’t sustain any injuries from the fall and managed to extricate himself from the half-sunken Ferrari. Unable to reach the river bank on his own, he was forced to wait next to his submerged supercar for around 40 minutes until the police and firefighters arrived to rescue him.

Adrian Bieri, commander of the Boltiger Fire Department spoke to Berner Zeitung about the incident. He mentioned that they responded with 16 men in three vehicles but decided to call the marine police due to the strong current. Using a ten-meter-long ladder, they were able to rescue the driver before a crane removed the Ferrari from the water.

The drivers of both vehicles were taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons but did not sustain serious injuries. The accident is still under investigation by the authorities, who are trying to determine the circumstances that led to the Ferrari’s swim.

Local media report that numerous vehicles have been involved in accidents on this particular road, which has an 80 km/h (50 mph) speed limit. As for cars jumping into rivers, it appears to be high season, following similar incidents involving a new Porsche 911 GT3 RS in Washington, US, and a classic Porsche 993 Turbo in Weiz, Germany.
