Chris Paul‘s future with the Golden State Warriors remains uncertain this NBA offseason. However, if he doesn’t remain with the team this summer, he may already have new suitors interested in his services.
NBA insider Marc Stein reports that the Los Angeles Lakers and the San Antonio Spurs are eyeing Paul as a potential addition to their rosters.
Paul’s contract with the Warriors is non-guaranteed for next season, leaving his future uncertain. If Golden State does not waive or trade him by June 28, his $30 million salary becomes fully guaranteed. The Warriors are currently weighing their options, which include keeping Paul, trading him, or waiving him to free up cap space.

Paul’s longstanding friendship with LeBron James and his desire to stay close to his family in Los Angeles make the Lakers a likely destination should he become a free agent. The Lakers must evaluate their backcourt options with D’Angelo Russell’s future up in the air as he draws interest from other suitors ahead of free agency.
Additionally, Paul’s strong relationship with Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich strengthens his possibility of joining San Antonio. The team’s rebuilding phase makes it tougher to envision the option being high on a wishlist, though.
The Spurs tried experimenting with Jeremy Sochan as a point guard early this season, but it proved an awkward fit. A significantly greater success was achieved when Tre Jones, a more natural point guard, was orchestrating the offense. Adding Paul into the mix could be a strong playmaking option to pair with Wembanyama to accelerate his development.

Another potential scenario involves Paul and the Warriors agreeing to move the contract guarantee date into July, giving the team more time to explore trade options. However, this requires Paul’s consent and cannot be done unilaterally by Golden State.
Paul played 58 games for the Warriors this season, averaging 9.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 6.8 assists per game. He remains a productive player despite being past his prime. He shot 44.1% from the field, 37.1% from 3-point range, and 82.7% from the free-throw line.
Paul is still pursuing his first NBA championship. With career averages of 17.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 9.4 assists, Paul remains one of the best point guards in NBA history. Whether he stays with the Warriors or moves to a new team, his veteran leadership and floor general skill-set continue to command intrigue around the league.

It remains to be seen if Paul will find the right team to realize his championship aspirations. Depending on his willingness to take less money, perhaps that would open up the possibility of commanding a more comprehensive array of suitors better positioned to contend immediately.
