The Sky refuse to let clouds darken their outlook

While too many turnovers and a subpar third quarter sunk the Chicago Sky against the Seattle Storm on Tuesday, Teresa Weatherspoon’s squad maintains an audacious optimism.

Although the Chicago Sky fell to the Seattle Storm 77-68 on Tuesday, the game was a case of not going away quietly nor being sour in defeat.

At the beginning, it was a constant tug-of-war battle where defense ruled and both offenses largely played inside the arc. Both squads went into the half having scored less than 40 points, with the Storm leading 38-37.

Then, the third quarter came and the Storm was raging. They outscored the Sky 26-15 due in large part to Chicago’s ball handling struggles. On the night, the Sky had a total of 21 turnovers, which resulted in their once solid defense becoming out of sorts as they couldn’t keep up with Seattle’s triple threat of Skylar Diggins-Smith, Nneka Ogwumike and Chicago-native Jewell Lloyd.

The Sky found themselves trailing 71-52, but then proceeded to score 12 points to bring them within five, 73-68, with three minutes left to play. Then, Marina Mabrey intercepted the ball from Diggins-Smith, but she threw away a golden opportunity—literally—when she attempted to throw the ball the full length of the court. Loyd picked it off and found Diggins-Smith in the corner, where she hit the 3 to give Seattle a 76-68 lead with 2:25 left to play, virtually ending the Sky’s hopes for a dramatic comeback.

Despite the loss, Chicago did have some strong individual performances:

Angel Reese

The high-profile rookie continues to assert her dominance, coming away with her first professional double-double as she scored 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. She also was perfect from the foul line (3-for-3) and had two steals.

Elizabeth Williams

The veteran center took the most field goal attempts with 11 and finished with 12 points and eight boards.

Dana Evans

She was the guiding force on the perimeter, as well as the sharp shooter who went 3-for-5 from the 3-point line and finished with 13 points and four assists.

Diamond DeShields

Despite only shooting 25 percent, DeShields showed her trademark grit and determination throughout, finishing with six points, two rebounds and two assists.

Chennedy Carter

Coming off the bench to provide relief for Evans in facilitating the offense, Carter never relented as her quickness and tenacity led to 12 points. She also was a catalyst in the Sky’s transition offense that led to some easy baskets. She spoke to how vital the transition offense is for her and the team as a whole:

I think it’s very impactful. I think pace is a big thing in this league. People underestimate that pace helps teams score easy and it also keeps the defenders off balance. So I think that me just coming in and being able to run and just trying to free the game up and open it up for everybody is valuable. That’s something I’m good at. I’m fast. I’m quick. I just want to use it to my strength and my ability. But for the team, we’re Chicago, we’re quick, that’s an easy way for us to score so we’ve got to get in transition a little bit more.

When it comes to the backcourt tandem of Evans and Carter, head coach Teresa Weatherspoon appreciates how they are able to feed off each other, with Evans in the starting rotation and Carter coming in strongly off the bench. She also noted how she likes that they use their quickness when running the offense, saying after the game:

That’s speed and quickness there. We want to be a team that really runs. We want to run. We want to have a pace in transition. That makes it difficult for any defense to get set. When we do that, we’re pretty good. Also, if you can’t get anything in transition, we want to be that team that sets up and executes offensively.

She then emphasized the team’s hopes by saying three times, “We will get better”.

The Chicago Sky (2-3) will take on the Los Angeles Sparks (2-4) at home on Thursday, May 30 at 8 p.m. ET.
