A few decades ago, the idea of a turnkey off-road pickup truck was nowhere near as popular as it is today. One vehicle that leans into that niche is the Chevrolet Colorado and one aspect of its design is specialized tire choice. Now, the automaker is recalling 56 units that might have the wrong tires. Included in the recall are the Z71 and Trail Boss trims from 2024.
Interestingly, all the affected vehicles feature a package called LPO SNX, which includes 20-inch black wheels. Chevy acknowledges that these vehicles “may” have the wrong tires, yet it also concedes in its regulatory filing that it anticipates defects in 100 percent of the recall population. It’s believed that the tires were likely swapped between the two trims during production.

As of the filing, there have been no reported field incidents associated with the defect.
Chevrolet also describes how it wants dealers to check the trucks in question. First, techs working on the Trail Boss should look for 275/60/R20 tires. If they’re not on all four corners then the truck fails. Second, they need to check the door jamb sticker to confirm that it matches the correct tire size. Technically it could fail either or both of these tests.
Those inspecting the Z71 need to look for 255/55/R20 tires and then again, check the sticker to ensure it matches. In addition to those tests, they also need to check to see if there’s any damage to the wheel liners. Again, the truck could, in theory, fail more than one of these tests. In all cases of test failure, Chevrolet will cover all associated costs with making the situation right.
Those concerned that their vehicle might be part of the recall can contact their local dealer or search their VIN at NHTSA.gov. Of course, they can also follow the above-mentioned procedure themselves to confirm if there’s a problem. Notably, those with any other wheel set don’t have to worry about this particular recall.
