The Chicago Sky did a complete 180 from Tuesday night’s loss to notch their first home win of the season, defeating the Los Angeles Sparks, 83-73.

A Teresa Weatherspoon-caliber Chicago Sky team emerged on Thursday evening as they soundly defeated the visiting Los Angeles Sparks, 83-73. What are the traits of the Teresa Weatherspoon-caliber Sky? Fast-paced, relentless and passionate.

Fresh off a hard loss to the Seattle Storm on Tuesday, when turnovers and a woeful third quarter sealed their fate, Chicago completely turned the tide. Their offense was fluid in the half court and in transition, as they won 10-4 in fast break points. They shared the ball with 27 total assists compared to LA’s 17. The Sky bench also dominated, outscoring the Sparks’ reserves 23-11. Chicago’s defense largely was steadfast, as they held LA to 40 percent from the field and 19 percent from 3. The Sky also forced the Sparks to turn the ball over 18 times. The rebounding matchup was competitive, but Chicago got the upper hand, 35-33.

In all, Weatherspoon’s Sky succeeded in virtually every aspect of the game.

Some notable individual performances included:

Marina Mabrey

After a sluggish performance against Seattle, Mabrey came storming out the gate and never relented. She was the ultimate playmaker as she finished with a team-high 20 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Mabrey also was lights out from beyond the arc, where she went 6-for-11.

Elizabeth Williams

A pounding presence in the paint, Williams finished with a double-double as she came away with 17 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks and four steals. She took more trips to the line, going 5-for-7. She also had the highest field goal percentage at 66.7 percent.

Dana Evans

She was as reliable as they come, serving as a unique combination of playmaker, risk taker and patient player. Evans did just a little bit of everything, which resulted in her scoring 15 points, dishing out four assists and collecting a career-high 5 steals.

Evans was effective in the transition play and did a solid job of protecting the ball. At times when she was in transition or going to the hole, she would bring the ball back up to the perimeter to set up the offense, something she was very adamant about doing going into the game. “I think for me it’s just taking like a ‘whoosah,’” she said. “I feel like that calms me down a little bit and I feel like I can set it up.”

Chennedy Carter

Complementing Evans in terms of transition and quickness, Carter was full-speed ahead coming off the bench. She was all over the place as she finished with 14 points and four assists. Afterwards, Weatherspoon had nothing but praise for her in terms of what she brings at both ends of the floor, saying:

She’s our energy. She’s our go to when she comes in the second unit. She’s explosive. She’s electric. She can basically do what she wants to, but she’s playing with the team. A player who can score the ball, but most importantly she’s a willing passer. She wants to get down the other end. She can guard anyone. Chennedy is a very special athlete. She’s taken full advantage of her opportunities and she wants the world to know that she can play this game.

Angel Reese

Though she was sometimes overwhelmed by the veteran presence of Dearica Hamby on the blocks, Reese held her own as she came away with six points and six rebounds. She didn’t score during the second and third quarters, but managed to hit two critical shots in the paint in the latter stages of the game to help seal the win.

Diamond DeShields

The grittiest of the grit can best describe the tenacious play of DeShields. She finished with only two points, but she grabbed two boards and handed out three assists. More than that, she was constantly taking a beating on the floor, but kept getting back up. Plus she was successful in challenging a foul called against her, as she cleanly blocked a shot by Stephanie Talbot at the 7:51 mark of the fourth quarter.

The Chicago Sky (3-3) will hit the road to take on the Indiana Fever (1-8) on Saturday, June 1 at 12 p.m. ET.
